S Y N O P S I S In the misty environs of Uttarakhand amid mighty Himalayan peaks, Kapil Malhotra, an ex army officer trains local kids in mountaineering and search & rescue. Gauri Singh, a school teacher in a deaf school approaches him with an offer to train the children in her school for a mountaineering expedition; children who are considered handicapped by the society due to their hearing and speech impairment. Kapil readily accepts the proposal. He selects 13 students from the deaf school and takes them to the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), Uttarkashi for advanced mountaineering training. This initiative of NIM is highly appreciated by local and national media. Sailing is however not smooth for these children at NIM. Hima Singh, an accomplished Instructor at NIM doubts the decision of Principal Col. Thapa to enroll these children in mountaineering course. She firmly believes these children to be good for nothing and totally unfit for a course that is physically challenging and mentally demanding. Due to some unforeseen circumstances, Kapil gets injured in a freak accident and Institute ends up sending Hima with the children for their final expedition in the Himalaya; completing which is a pre-condition for their becoming a certified mountaineer. Himalaya soon starts to take its toll. Slight misjudgment and negligence drops Hima off the cliff and soon her injuries start to get worsened and she ends up unconscious and immobile. 13 deaf children thus get stranded in the wilderness of higher Himalayas with their Instructor unconscious and fighting for life. They have no means of communication with the base camp. Their dream of becoming mountaineers is thus in jeopardy. THEY HAVE TO RESCUE THEmSELVES TO SURVIVE

NO WORDS TO SPEAK NO SOUND TO HEAR JUST A DREAM TO FULFILL The life of their Instructor is at stake and to save her they have to abandon the expedition and rescue her. That means end of their dream; dream of completing the expedition and becoming accomplished mountaineers. Choices are not easy to be made and stakes are higher than ever. The Silent Heroes is all about the choices these deaf children make silently but boldly. The choices they make have much in store for the whole deaf community. THEY ARE NOT DISABLED BUT DIFFERENTLY ABLED

Director's Note My first encounter with the world of silence was five years back in a school for special children while making a documentary on deaf kids. It left a great impact on my mind as I had never experienced anything like that before. World calls them handicap but after spending time with them I felt like a handicap in their world unable to understand their life, signals and actions. I realized that they are not disabled, but simply differently abled and the same thought later became the premise and foundation for my film 'The Silent Heroes'. With that one liner I moved ahead to this adventurous journey and conceptualized whole story after that. Next step - Real heroes: 13 real deaf kids. Location: Snow laden mountains of Himalayas. And between the fast flow of Ganges and its frequent rapids, we tried to capture Uttarakhand's beauty and life as it was before the disaster of 2013. I wanted to do the film with real deaf kids who have actually gone through the pain and hardships of being a handicap because only they could have done justice to the roles, and they have. I chose real locations for more realistic approach. I knew it would be a challenge for me and I knew it would be much more than a challenge for these kids. I was skeptical at first about inexperienced innocent kids being able to do what was required in script or being able to withstand unfavorable climatic conditions and hard shooting schedules. But I was surprised to see the enthusiasm and excitement of the kids which cleared off all the doubts from my mind. Shooting during the scary cold winter of February, I remember sometimes we had to go early foggy morning before sunrise to locations and sometimes stay near scary rivers at night amidst cold skin piercing air waiting for shots to be canned. Crew members weren't even able to stand but they did. Professional artists were giving retakes but never called quits. And in between all this, those 13 kids showed us a strange amount of courage and will power by not just withstanding the angry climate but giving first take OK shots. They were the real source of inspiration and motivation for all of us. Before shooting started I used to feel that I should tell the life tales of these brave kids to the world. During shooting, I wished to tell the parents of kids about how talented and skilful they were; parents who normally look down upon their own kids. But after the shooting I have now realized that something has changed inside me in those 40 days. I think I have come out as a better man out of this beautiful experience. It can never be compensated what these 13 little deaf kids taught me about life, in signs. Mr. Mahesh Bhatt

Director's Profile Mahesh Bhatt began as a journalist, activist and socio-environmental documentary film maker 15 years back. He has travelled extensively throughout India and produced, directed and written several documentaries, docu-drama series, news capsules and TV programs based on grassroot level issues of various regions. Later he started to experiment with the idea of mass awareness and knowledge dissemination amongst the masses beyond theatrical reach, especially in remote villages of Uttarakhand region of Himalaya through amalgamation of suitable doses of entertainment in his short films. THE SILENT HEROES is his first full-length feature film and an attempt to tell a beautiful soulful story to the wider audience and touch lives on a wider landscape. Mr. Mahesh Bhatt Producer's Profile Kamal Birani is an accomplished business personality from Punjab. He has travelled across the world for furthering his business interests. Travelling across the mountains has been his passion and during the course of one such journey across the Garhwal Himalaya he happened to get to know The Silent Heroes. The idea of a film with real deaf kids inspired him to be associated with the project. Excited by the idea he even came to Dehradun to spend some time with these kids and watch them rehearse and act. Executive Producer Dr. Piyoosh Rautela is a man of multiple talents and though a Disaster Manager by profession he is a prolific writer and visionary and at ease both in Hindi and English as in technical and social issues. He has been part of the project ever since the inception of bleak idea of the silent heroes. He has been the real source of energy behind this project. Shooting a film in the Himalayan terrain with limited resources and with the script demanding more than ten extremely rugged and cold locations, dealing and communicating with real life deaf kids would not have been possible without the help, guidance and positive attitude of Dr. Rautela. It was his courage, experience and far sightedness that helped in completing the shooting schedule in forty days. His guidance and support was always available from the very inception of the film to its conclusion. Without his expert advice and help on various technical issues including at scripting stage of this project would not have been completed. Mr. Kamal Birani Dr. Piyoosh Rautela Creative Producer Maanuv Bharadwaj is a man living many lives at once. He is an avid mountain lover, trekker, an actor, an adventurous wanderer, a writer and a creative powerhouse all at once. He got associated with the film as the lead actor first but the interaction with these special children and the passionate team pulled him into being a part of the crew itself, taking onus of assisting the Director in fine tuning every single macro and micro creative decision from scripting, shooting, editing, music, background score, sub titles, publicity design as well as media and buyer interactions. He has certainly grown beyond his brief of the role of Kapil Malhotra and has been instrumental in bringing out the final film to the viewer in its current form ensuring that it remains true to the core spirit of finding heroism in these exceptional children dubbed Silent by the world but who are Silent Heroes in reality.
