dabrowski s dog black dog has fleas accused sprite he sits there and scratches his fleas and they get into my cast and make my leg itchy and then they make my woolen jumper all itchy too and then i notice that the tags on all my clothes are scratchy and then i notice that the seams on my sock are not lined up straight and they are digging into my toes and then i feel itchy all over and anxious and out of sorts and it s all black dog s fault i had been wondering where the various black dogs that had been pestering sprite had come from hoping i would be able to return them to their various owners none of them were wearing id tags but i recognized this one now that must be the dabrowski s dog i said i meant to warn you about dabrowski s overexcitabilities when i was telling you how to help black dog who feels like an alien because increased intensity and sensitivity is often part of being a gifted person itchy black dog and you are possibly suffering from sensual overexcitabilities we will talk about it more later but in the meantime you might like to read stephanie tolan s dabrowski s over-excitabilities a layman s explanation at http www.stephanietolan.com/dabrowskis.htm

all the dabrowski dogs part 1 do you remember itchy dabrowski black dog asked sprite well i found out that the dabrowskis have five dogs and they are all over-excitable and they are all a bit like me the itchy one is called sensual he loves the feel of some materials but finds other scratchy he loves to look at beautiful views but really hates the flickering of neon lights he loves to hear beautiful music but does not like loud or dissonant sounds he really hates thunder he has a highly developed sense of smell too he often rolls in revolting smelly stuff and comes in all green and smelly and thinks he should rub against people and share his delightful smells with them as sprite had discovered in people the sensual overexcitability often shows up in finding some materials scratchy or irritating and wanting all the tags removed from their clothes and many gifted people have the same heightened senses that sensual dog experiences.

then there is psycho motor isn t that a great name for a dog said sprite psycho motor is always running and jumping and barking and chasing his tail some people say psycho motor has adhd i don t know whether he does or whether he is just very active i guess i m a bit like psycho motor too because he barks all the time and people say i talk all the time and that i talk very fast and they can t understand me i knew what sprite meant many gifted people have the psychomotor overexcitability some need to pace while they are thinking some find it easier to concentrate if they are juggling and many talk a great deal and speak very fast and many gifted people have trouble getting to sleep because their mind is so active that they have trouble relaxing.

all the dabrowski dogs part 2 the dabrowskis also have a super smart border collie called intellectual said sprite he loves complex reasoning and solving problems and puzzles he loves finding out new information and playing cognitive games he even programmed a robot to round up the twitter birds and herd them into a can i love intellectual i think he s a lot like me in some ways said sprite and then there s emotional she is so exhausting to play with because she is all happy and exuberant one moment and then sadder than sad the next and she is really intense and wants really deep friendships and to share her heart and soul with you and then you feel all the emotions with her and it feels like you have been on a roller coaster ride i want to be friends with emotional but i m so much like her that it is really exhausting said sprite i could see that if sprite was going to be having ongoing contact with the overexcitable dabrowski dogs i would need more information to help her cope with them.

my favourite dabrowski dog is imaginational said sprite he is a bedlington terrier who likes to imagine that he is a lamb and he has a whole lovely imaginary world with meadows full of flowers and butterflies and rivers of singing waters and glistening fish he is a real poet when he talks about it he paints the picture with words and you can really see it too he must be like snoopy from the peanuts cartoon i said snoopy was often sitting on the roof of his kennel and pretending to be a fighter pilot engaging the red baron i ll show you the peanuts cartoon book sometime i know imaginational dreams because i see his feet twitching as if he is running in his sleep and sometimes he barks or whimpers while he is sleeping i dream a lot too said sprite i ll tell you about my dreams sometime and the teachers always say i day dream too they keep on saying things like `earth to sprite come in sprite but it is because the classes are so boring i just tune out and take a ride in a hot air balloon and look down at imaginational s meadows and rivers all spread out like a patch work quilt it was useful in english one day when we were making poems using the poetry creator and mr m said my ideas were excellent and used them as examples for the class but then we went into maths and ms b said `get your head out of the clouds sprite anyway imaginational is my favourite dabrowski dog

sharing the news with the dabrowski dogs gifted children are often capable of reading material which they are not able to cope with emotionally when sprite reads the newspaper the overexcitable dabrowski dogs gather round intellectual reads over her shoulder and keeps up a running commentary on the reliability of the sources the gaps in logic or veracity of the articles and what future implications there will be emotional finds most of the news disturbing and feels injustice and the pain of victims very keenly imaginational imagines solutions for an ideal world where all would be treated with respect and equity sensual usually sits and scratches he claims that he has an allergy to the printing ink but it could be that the content of the news is causing the distress and that scratching has become a habit and a coping mechanism for him i am not really sure how much psychomotor hears and understands as he is usually off bouncing and barking but sprite assures me that although he does not appear to be paying attention he in fact understands and can relate all the main points of the article.
