the western weekender friday april 15 2011 news local 3 anzac day is a time to reflect on those who fought for what we have today we caught up with four local men who were all part of perhaps our most controversial war t hough the word `anzac conjures sepia images of veterans from the fi rst and second world wars it is also a day to remember and recognise those who have fought to protect australia and many who continue to fight for protection overseas one such contribution was made during perhaps the most controversial war in the 20th century the gruelling jungle warfare against the vietcong between 1955 and 1975 penrith locals neville barnier paul crofts john king and michael bellingham all spent a year serving in vietnam during their early 20 s mr barnier also the penrith rsl sub-branch president was conscripted for national service in 1966 and volunteered for vietnam a month before his service fi nished in 1968 i was posted to a unit known as the second advanced ordinance depot at vung tao where i was a nco corporal in the ammunition mr barnier said the reason we were there was because the centurion tanks were old ww2 tanks and nato did not have any ammunition for them mr bellingham considers his fortune lightly he was trained as a signaller for the support company of 5rar and one of the many troops labelled pongos as they rarely had the chance to shower i spent three quarters of my time out on operations in the bush our vietnam veterans john king michael bellingham neville barnier and paul crofts [photo melinda jenkins smelling i was part of the fi rst tour of duty and was part of the fi rst intake in 1966 i won the lottery and it s the only bloody lottery i have ever won he laughed if you were born in 1945 which mr bellingham was you had a very strong chance of being called up for service reflecting on the good times and the bad mr crofts and mr king realised they may have even met in vietnam without knowing some 40 years ago mr king was trained for transportation moving troops from vung tao to front line positions as well as ammunition and food i got a standing ovation one time when the hmas jeparit was late and i brought the grog in all the boys were cheering he said 2rar was the battalion mr crofts served in as an infantryman between 1970 and 1971 they used to fly us out in helicopters and drop us in the jungle and if we were lucky we would get picked up and taken to bases mr crofts said the four veterans will take part in the penrith rsl s march on sunday april 17 to commemorate their colleagues the march begins at 2.30pm at penrith fire station thank you sale 995wwd6614 celebrating 500,000 successful treatments under arm must present coupon limited availability 19 must present coupon limited availability 29 face brazilian must present coupon limited availability 39 69 149 89 169 or chest full back half leg or full leg must present coupon limited availability must present coupon limited availability

4 opinion friday april 15 2011 the western weekender from the editor s desk troy dodds not necessarily problem gamblers in fact if figures released by clubs australia are correct just two per cent of pokie players are problem gamblers for the sake of two per cent we are going to overhaul the entire poker machine setup ah but hang on it s not for the sake of those two per cent at all it s really all for the sake of one man andrew wilkie get him off-side and julia gillard has a major problem in short wilkie will pull his support for ms gillard if she doesn t push ahead with guaranteed have written in this column before about things that don t make sense tough issues where logical answers just don t seem to get a run well we ve got a hum-dinger of a situation like that at the moment th is whole thing about poker machines and a massive overhaul regarding how they work and new limits that could be placed on them really is way out of whack th is week the clubs industry officially launched their campaign against the implementation of technology that they say would require any person who plays a poker machine to register for a licence to gamble now the clubs industry have their own motives for ensuring that reform doesn t impact profits so let s leave them to the side for one moment the real issue here is problem gamblers and if reforming poker machine laws will actually help the issue amongst possible reforms is reducing the limit of each individual bet on a poker machine to $1 down from $10 though in most cases $5 is the maximum bet according to the herald punters could face the possibility of choosing between slower machines with smaller jackpots or faster machines that require players to enter what they are prepared to lose in a day or over a week once the pre-committed amount is reached they would be locked out from playing the faster machines for 24 hours in every club of course the whole rule falls over when you consider that a bloke who has reached his pre-committed level can walk over to the tab place a bet on a horse for whatever amount he chooses and just keep punting th is whole big brother concept of a licence to punt would stop many people from gambling altogether such people are 998wwd3537 i julia gillard will never be looked at as a prime minister with conviction and strength the pre-commitment system which ultimately raises the question is this move totally politically motivated or could it actually do some good i m not a professor nor am i looking at any research when i give the answer of no a problem gambler is a problem gambler and a problem gambler will fi nd his or her way around whatever system is put in place and if they can t they ll just head to the tab or online where such strong restrictions do not exist can you imagine the grandmother who likes to put a couple of dollars through the pokies each week signing up for a `licence so she can do it of course she won t and that is where we get back to clubs australia and their belief that it will cost them money clubs of course give significantly to the community and employ many people so the ladder of ramifications is a long one and one that will bite hard i m not a regular poker machine player by any means and to be honest the whole licence thing would have very little impact on me but i and i think many others can see the lunacy in all of this there is no doubt that problem gambling is a significant issue and in fact the two per cent figure mentioned earlier is probably wildly inaccurate because plenty of people out there would still be hiding their secret but the approach in all of this appears to be wrong and i just can t see how anyone could possibly believe a pre-commitment system or a lowering of maximum bets could possibly have a dent in solving the issue of problem gambling particularly as i say when other parts of the gambling industry do not have such stringent rules th is all comes down to the problem of minority government julia gillard and co are being forced to bow on issues that perhaps as a government they do not necessarily believe should be part of their agenda keep andrew wilkie happy keep the greens happy keep rob and tony happy with so many people to keep happy there s little time to govern some believe the government setup we have means there is more open and transparent policy and that the government is kept in check but it also prevents the government from really making its mark and julia gillard will never be looked at as a prime minister with conviction and strength given we all know the truth behind the scenes all of that aside it would be a disgrace for a government to introduce the kind of technology being suggested just as it is a disgrace to try to enforce plain packaging of cigarettes if you believe something is a serious problem have the balls to do something serious about it and not just apply a band-aid here and there 998wwd8409 paul th um bsup 998wwd1896 julius phil
