to the school community i would like to thank everyone for their support during a very challenging term we have all faced unique experiences that have tested our ability to cope the staff have appreciated your understanding in getting their learning programmes back in place staff have spent time this term working through the needs of our students and collecting data for our term 2 programmes our curriculum focus next term will be science as the notice has been lifted to boil the water we are now flushing out all our drinking taps to enable students to access the water thank you to everyone for your support in ensuring your child had a water bottle this term i hope everyone has a restful holiday break this break incorporates easter and anzac day advice from the ministry of education flu vaccinations ­ the canterbury district health board has announced that free flu vaccinations are now available for all canterbury residents under 18 years of age contact your local gp for an appointment student/parent welfare ­ returning to a daily routine provides students with a sense of security and reassurance many parent questions can be answered using the tip sheets on the ministry of education website individual students needing additional professional support can go through right service right time on 0800 777 846 or visit www.rightservice.org.nz parents are able to access support through their gp service or government counselling helpline 0800 779 977 sleep disruption ­ when children have been through something scary it s not unusual for their sleep patterns to be affected here are some helpful tips try and keep to the same sleep routine every day establish a bed time routine that includes cuddle time don t rush bedtime be prepared for it to take longer than usual if children don t want to sleep alone that s okay but make a plan for them to return to their normal sleeping arrangements if they have bad dreams comfort your child and explain that bad dreams are normal and that they will eventually go away congratulations anna taylor from room 8 competed at the canterbury championship rhythmic gymnastics competition at the weekend and got 1st in ribbon 2nd in hoop 3rd in rope and was placed 2nd overall fantastic effort well done anna year 7 wainui camp from march 30th to april 1st the year 7s had a fantastic time at wainui camp this was a great learning experience for the children as they went coasteering tried their hand at archery made a raft and they went outside their comfort zone when doing high ropes.

welcome to new students we welcome these students who have started at oaklands since our last newsletter:tanika nolan in rm 20 icas computer skills science exams all students wanting to take part in these exams need to return their permission slip and money to the office by 9am friday morning regards caroline gatherer sport uniforms it is quite possible that lurking behind the sofa is a t-shirt top netball skirt etc that is part of the winter sport uniform if this is so please return it by this friday we begin winter sport in term 2 and will be stocktaking during the break sporting success at oaklands school we love to celebrate sporting excellence here at oaklands school and we are aware that there are many students achieving great things outside of our school sports programme if your child has achieved in sports outside of school please let us know by emailing mr brown on bryan.brown@oaklands.school.nz public health nurse we are pleased to advise our school community our new public health nurse is liz hampton parents are welcome to contact her if they have any health concerns or questions about their children liz can be contacted on 383 6877 ext 99615 school information please be aware you can get up to date information on school trips sports etc by phoning the school on 322 8735 and pressing the number 3 option sun hats a reminder that sun hats are compulsory in terms 4 and 1 thank you for all your efforts in ensuring that your children have their sun hats please make sure they are named school gate for the safety of your children we are closing the school gates before and after school if you have a disability or need to collect an injured child please ask the duty teacher at the gate to let you through school banking thursday is banking day at oaklands school the drop off box is in the office term 1 promotion each week a deposit is made through the asb school banking programme each child is automatically in the draw to win 25 prizes of $50 we are now banking with asb and the new bank account number is 123153 0098196 00 absentees we are now required to make daily contact for all absences unless previously advised to the teacher or school office you can phone these absences into 322 8735 picking the 2 option and leaving your child s name room number and a brief explanation for their absences alternately parents who only have cell phones can text absences to the school s cell phone 021 126 3058 school uniform suppliers as part of the board of trustees review of the school uniform we have another supplier for the trousers if you are wanting a different style and material the supplier is mainland uniforms 511 wairakei road phone 360 3037 donations the school donation for 2011 is again $80.00 per family per or $20.00 per term a reminder that this is now due a big thank you to the 210 families who have paid their donation school canteen lunches the canteen is open wednesdays and fridays a reminder that if you wish to have this facility it is important that it is supported on behalf of the staff margaret trotter principal community notices dental care over the school holidays the community dental service will operate an emergency service over the school holidays this service is to provide relief of pain only and will not undertake `routine treatment the service will be available each working day from 8:30am until 12:30pm from the hillmorton community clinic sylvan street christchurch for the following times monday 18th april ­ 29th april 2011 excluding weekends good friday and easter monday this service will operate by appointment only and if we are unable to see your child alternative options will be given if your child has dental pain as a result of an accident please contact your dentist in the first instance you can phone and make an appointment for the emergency clinic by ringing 335 4222 alternatively your school dental clinic phone will have a message on how to access emergency care dental care if your child requires urgent dental care please ring 0800 846 983 for an appointment at the hillmorton community clinic in sylvan street off lincoln road
