Our Mission The mission of the Sarcoma Foundation of America (SFA) is to advocate for sarcoma patients by funding research and by increasing awareness about the disease. The organization raises money to privately fund grants for sarcoma researchers and conducts education and advocacy efforts on behalf of sarcoma patients. The Organization The Sarcoma Foundation of America, a 501(c)(3) charity/ community foundation, is located in Damascus, MD, and has volunteer-based SFA chapters supporting local fundraising, education and outreach efforts. Charity Navigator has honored the SFA with its prestigious Four Star Charity rating. What is Sarcoma? Sarcoma is a rare cancer of the connective tissues. Sarcoma represents 1% of all cancers but 20% of all pediatric cancers. It appears in a variety of tissue structures, including nerves, muscles, fat, joints, and bone, collectively referred to as the body’s connective tissues. Most frequently, sarcomas are found in the limbs, where the majority of the body’s connective tissue resides. Tumors are often hidden deep in the body, thus making it difficult for an early diagnosis. When it is diagnosed, the tumor is frequently too large to provide hope of a cure.

SFA National Programs and Initiatives Investing in Innovative Research SFA raises funds to support translational research focused on discovering and developing new and effective therapies to treat and eradicate sarcoma. Since its inception, the SFA has invested nearly $7 million in research. The SFA funds cutting-edge research projects that would not initially be funded by the government or pharmaceutical companies. Additionally, the SFA has funded multiple grants through the Conquer Cancer Foundation and has partnered with the Sarcoma Alliance for Research through Collaboration (SARC) to fund a long-term grant that supports increased research into sarcoma. Education SFA coordinates a patient education conference program entitled, “Ask the Experts”. These conferences bring together key stakeholders such as sarcoma patients, sarcoma survivors, caregivers, and expert doctors to discuss the leading treatments and developments of sarcoma research. The patient education conferences, held throughout the United States, represent an exceptional opportunity for patients and others to gain insight and ask questions to leading sarcoma researchers and doctors. Advocacy and Awareness SFA advocates for increased research funding for sarcoma from both the public and private sectors. The organization works with government, for profit and nonprofit cancer organizations, and the biopharmaceutical industry to improve the level of awareness, interest and investment in translational research for sarcoma. These efforts ensure that sarcoma, though relatively rare, receives attention from government and other entities that have the interest and ability to support scientific research into sarcoma. SFA participates in professional medical meetings and sits on local, regional and national cancer committees to create awareness about the disease. The SFA represents the interests of sarcoma patients with regard to access to clinical trials, innovative therapies and treatment or a second opinion at a multi-disciplinary cancer center. Race to Cure Sarcoma™ Sarcoma patients, survivors and their friends and loved ones have been coming together through community events for years and SFA sought to rally that support throughout the nation. That’s how Race to Cure Sarcoma™ 5K run/walk series was born. Partnering with local treatment and research facilities in cities across in the United States, the SFA raises money to fund research on both the local and national levels. The Race to Cure Sarcoma™ also creates awareness for the disease and helps to promote a sense of community amongst those whose lives have been impacted by sarcoma.
