inaugural address at 6 aissq th ladies and gentlemen am happy to be inaugurating the national conference on `science and spiritual quest which will be focusing on the theme integrating capabilities with values i congratulate the organizers of this conference the delhi technological university an institution imparting education in engineering technology applied sciences and management and the bhaktivedanta institute a centre working for dialogue between science and vedanta science alongwith its inventions innovations and findings have done much to serve the cause of humanity it has given us greater understanding about our universe discovering new stars new planets and how planets rotate on their axis science has given us explanations of how sound and light travel it has decoded the dna structure and provided details of the composition of various acids and alkaline substances science has also given to us new instruments and tools that have wide-ranging applications it has also taught us how to process materials and use them in a variety of ways scientists have developed telephones cameras radios railway engines cars and aeroplanes science has contributed to finding responses for enhancing food production and eradicating diseases endless is the list of the discoveries of science i witnessed the exhibition outside this hall and i appreciate the innovative innovations of your students it is now advancing to newer horizons of human endeavours with pioneer work being done in many fields like information-technology nano-technology and bio-technology even as science advances human beings continue to seek answers to basic questions like who are we where do we come from why are we here these questions are fundamental to what is called a spiritual quest a process of self-realization and a search for universal truth and for a higher purpose of life as rabindranath tagore said great civilizations in the east as well as in the west have flourished in the past because they produced food for the spirit of man for all time they tried to build their life upon their faith in ideals the faith that is creative spiritualism transcends theological divisions and attempts to provide answers to the human race about the meaning of life and guiding them towards a noble path it is a pursuit for peace an adherence to goodness and kindness an effort for overcoming anger and greed and a commitment to work with dedication for human welfare the many sages philosophers and thinkers who have traversed the path of spiritualism have imparted to society at large and millions of people solace and guidance telling them that even as we prosper materially we must never forget the innate goodness which is present in every human being and always strive to follow the path of virtue righteousness and dharma their message was the message contained in all religions that the human race is one and we must strive to work for the broader objective of the welfare of humankind rather than being selfish and working only for ourselves those who are in pursuit of spiritual quest work selflessly without looking for self-aggrandizement i appreciate the holding of this conference which focuses on a dialogue on science and spirituality and is in keeping with a long tradition of conversation between scientists philosophers and spiritualists the two forces science and spirituality have had the deepest influence on human development are these two antithetical to each other this question has been discussed and debated often it has arisen in the minds of many scientists who have spoken on this issue most famously albert einstein one of the greatest scientists of the 20th century said science without religion is lame religion without science is blind it projects the inevitable need to understand without prejudice to the importance of science and scientific temper for the welfare of humanity the obligation to look beyond science and the necessity to look within oneself in order to complete the personality that is human it is generally thought that to be scientifically minded is the opposite of being spiritually minded and vice-a www.dtutimes.org 13th edition page 2 speech by h.e the president of india smt pratibha devisingh patil during the inauguration of the national conference on `science and spiritual quest i thank you versa but this is not so philosophers thinkers and leaders have articulated views on the link between the purpose of science and spiritualism i recall thoughts of leading figures to illustrate views on this subject swami vivekananda a great spiritual leader was of the view that art science and religion are three different ways of expressing a single truth gandhiji the father of our nation and leader of our freedom struggle described satyagraha as a purely spiritual weapon pandit nehru our first prime minister felt that without science one would perish and also without spirituality one would perish and hence the two were essential if the modern world was to survive and progress science and spiritualism have many commonalities both require a disciplined approach both require open questioning minds it is the interplay between science and spirituality that provides a balance between material advancement and developing a deep consciousness when spirituality and science work together it can be greatly beneficial to take an example persons suffering from heart disease can be treated through medicine or surgery or even a heart transplant the methodologies of science spiritualism can bring about a transformation in their thinking and make them good-hearted persons who have feelings for humanity a heart transplant cannot transform the heart and transformation of the heart cannot come without the heart being in tact hence when science and spirituality have a complimentary and supplementary relationship this can make the life of an individual holistic and complete and at the same time bring about stability in society as well as peace and harmony in this world the 21st century will i am sure see accelerated development in various disciplines of science and technology it will also be a testing time for scientists and society there will be many choices to be made regarding the use of inventions and innovations the question of how to use science for beneficial and not destructive purposes will be an important issue similarly the question of harmony of science with nature is very important climate change has produced new challenges science has not only the possibility but also the responsibility to provide solutions to conserve and preserve the environment and nature human beings too need to realize the importance of maintaining ecological balance we would also need to see how to retain our humanness in a technologically sophisticated world as i am speaking at a conference organized by a university i would like to emphasize that universities medical universities and agricultural universities should engage themselves in socially relevant research and in innovations that can bring benefits to the people and the country the education system must look at the holistic development of the youth of the country education is about knowledge it pushes the frontiers of knowledge it should be the aim of the youth to become intellectually competent and technically skilled knowledge without values is however incomplete education without values is like a flower without fragrance education should impart values to the youth that makes them sensitive to fellow human beings and the environs around them it is a value system that can prepare the younger generation to become responsible citizens values provide an anchor in life as well as the ability to take decisions however difficult they make one strong and capable of withstanding the trials and tribulations of life also if students were equipped with the right value base along with the capabilities created by science and technology they will serve society with devotion and commitment creating prosperity and happiness i once again i convey my best wishes to the organizers of this conference the discussions and exchange of views here should promote greater appreciation of the role of both science and spirituality in the whole world jai hind source http in the limelight the following is an article that appeared in the times of india in february 2011 on `dhobi an innovative washing machine developed by dtu students t is hard to imagine dhobi is like any other fully a washing machine automatic washing machine which could double up available in the market except that as exercise equipment it does not have the heating facility and also help in saving for drying clothes energy however with their out-of-the-box thinking a team of five students have developed a pedal-powered washing machine which can run without electricity the machine developed by two computer science students one student each from mechanical civil and electrical branch of engineering at delhi technological university dtu will be useful in rural areas as well where there is no electricity the team claims that the machine called dhobi is like any other fully automatic washing machine available in the market except that it does not have the heating facility for drying clothes what s more people can also burn calories as they pedal to wash the clothes secondyear computer science student vishma rai said we have been working on this project since 2010 the inspiration for this is a cycle rickshaw a conventional washing machine essentially uses a motor to rotate fins which furiously stir water for the purpose of cleaning clothes in a water and soap solution our machine dhobi uses bicycle components www.dtutimes.org 13th edition page `dhobi burns your calories and washes clothes 6 i to simulate motor action our design resembles a horizontal axis washer which is commercially available recently the model won the first prize at the innovative green energy technologies for india 2011 according to the team they have created two versions of the machine one for rural india and the other for the urban segment it is a simple machine when we pedal it will move the gear system and subsequently the shafts the shafts in turn will move the inner drums for change of drums one can change the gear the only thing it lacks is the hot drying facility the model we designed for the urban segment also have a digital meter and a dynamo which is not there in the rural one said rai according to the makers of the model another plus point apart from energy saving is the economy factor on an average a washing machine is rated at 2,200 watts for a washing cycle of 90 minutes assuming a unit rate of rs 3.5 the cost comes to rs 12 per wash now for a household of five members the machine is operated twice a day that makes the expenditure rs 24 per day therefore rs 740 is electricity cost on washing clothes every month but our dhobi is a one-time investment of rs 3,500 for a rural household and rs 4,500 for the urban household all parts are practically maintenance-free and if any part stops functioning it can be easily changed the system does not become redundant explained rai the machine promises saving of precious time offers much needed exercise at no extra effort and a sustainable green technology for both the urban and rural mass final ieee 1901tm broadband over power line standard now published eee the world s largest professional association advancing technology for humanity announced recently that the final ieee 1901tm broadband over power line bpl standard finalized in december 2010 was now published and available online at http standards.ieee org/findstds/standard/1901-2010.html or through the ieee xplore digital library at http ieeexplore.ieee.org/articlesale/sarticle jsp?arnumber=5678772 sponsored by the ieee communications society this globally recognized bpl standard is designed for use in a wide range of applications including smart energy transportation and local area networks lans in both the home and the enterprise networking products that fully comply with ieee 1901 will deliver data rates in excess of 500 mbps in lan applications in first-mile/last-mile applications ieee 1901-compliant devices will achieve ranges of up to 1500 meters the technology specified by ieee 1901 uses sophisticated modulation techniques to transmit data over standard ac power lines of any voltage at transmission frequencies of less than 100 mhz ieee 1901 will benefit utilities service providers and consumer electronics i companies anyone with a stake in smart grid technologies as well as smart-meter providers and home appliance manufacturers despite india s power grid delhi technological university being not as advanced has submitted a research proposal as developed countries on bpl to the ministry of bpl is likely to make an communication and information impact as its benefits far outweigh its drawbacks technology government of india corporate india could quickly embrace bpl because of its inherent advantages over ethernet iiit allahabad has successfully tested bpl jamia milia islamia used the bpl to capture hairline differences in track and field events that would decide the winner during the commonwealth games 2010 delhi technological university has submitted a research proposal on bpl to the ministry of communication and information technology and a pilot project in `alipur which probably has the most challenging electricity infrastructure in india was successful about the ieee standards association the ieee standards association a globally recognized standards-setting body within the ieee develops consensus standards through an open process that engages industry and brings together a broad stakeholder community ieee standards set specifications and best practices based on current scientific and technological knowledge the ieee-sa has a portfolio of over 900 active standards and more than 600 standards under development for more information visit http standards.ieee.org a global standard such as ieee 1901 being immediately available will support faster adoption of bpl in india also since broadband penetration is a major area of focus for indian corporate and bpl is considered among the best options to enhance penetration the 1901 standard will be a boon this is an excerpt of a main article the full article is available at http alumnispeak www.dtutimes.org 13th edition page pan dce-dtu network launched to strengthen alumni network 7 i n a major initiative towards strengthening the alumni network of delhi polytechnic which was renamed later as dce delhi college of engineering and now delhi technological university dtu and providing them an opportunity to connect with their alma mater the university has launched pan dce-dtu network in online form the website www.pandcedtu.org was launched at the first meeting of the international alumni advisory committee iaac of dtu held on 24 february 2011 at india habitat centre in the capital the meeting was attended by mr raj soin chairman soin international us and distinguished alumnus of dce who has been appointed as the chairman abroad for iaac mr k.l chugh former chairman itc ltd also an alumnus of dce who has been selected as the chairman india for iaac and sh s.p goel a 1954 graduate of dce among other young and senior alumni members of dce pan dce-dtu will provide a much needed interface between the alumni students faculty and administration of the varsity it will allow alumni to connect among themselves share their success stories and career advancements and know about the activities and developments taking place at the university it will also provide an opportunity to the existing students to connect with the alumni and seek their guidance for their projects research and even placements the alumni connect in the form of pan dce-dtu will also enable the university to involve its distinguished alumni in a more significant manner for making dtu a truly world class university informed prof p.b sharma vice chancellor dtu the occasion also saw many alumni members coming up with noteworthy suggestions on strengthening dtu as a university according to mr soin it is important to have a full-fledged alumni relations office in dtu which can connect and stay in touch with the alumni of dce dtu spread across the globe and look at ways of harnessing alumni s support in various endeavours of the university applauding dtu for establishing a technology incubation centre for encouraging entrepreneurship among young students mr chugh called for a greater involvement of the alumni in functioning of the university the management of the university should acknowledge that alumni are an important component of the university and they should be considered as `interested enlightened owners of the university he said the vice chancellor was pleased to inform the gathering that besides launching pan dce-dtu the university is also keen to establish an international alumni centre with conferencing and residential facilities and alumni fund at dtu which can be utilized for supporting research and innovations of students and faculty inviting distinguished faculty from india and abroad and establishing specialized centres for research and innovations in the area of solar energy vlsi design and design engineering centre among others anesh did a course in mechanical engineering from delhi college of engineering in 1982 and joined telco tata motors ltd in its earlier incarnation in jamshedpur i hated my job on the shop floor he says he moved on to study at the indian institute of management in kolkata after graduating in 1985 he joined a company then known as hindustan computers ltd now hcl technologies ltd india s fourth largest information technology firms as executive assistant to its founder shiv nadar nadar he fondly reminiscences taught him to take bold decisions when hcl faced a problem in its customer service department nadar sent ganesh to fix it at 25 if you have 400 people reporting to you then you start thinking why should i do this for others why can t i do it for myself he says that was an era when multiple vendors sold hardware that was not compatible with each other ganesh and two friends founded it&t a hardware maintenance firm working in the area of system integration in 1998 when he moved away from the company for what he says are personal reasons sunil mittal chairman of bharti airtel ltd asked him to take over a loss-making company called bharti british telecom a joint venture acquired from wipro ltd ganesh turned the company around in two years the interesting thing is i did not fire a single person nor change a single direct report to me so sometimes for resolving things it is all about providing direction leadership and putting in systems and processes g dtu dce alumnus krishnan ganesh now sets goal to create $1 billion brand tutorvista took about three years to fructify and in between ganesh mentored and invested in marketics in which he invested less than halfa-million dollars wns eventually bought the company for $63 million tutorvista has 2,000 teachers in india who cater to some 20,000 students mostly in the us via the internet school tuition in the us typically costs $40 an hour that ganesh says meant three things one it was available only for the rich two you have to be desperate enough to want it three because the meter is ticking people were only going to use it for the minimum time necessary one model some start-ups attempted was to lower the cost that is the classic cost-based offshore model ganesh has founded three companies prior to tutorvista his first it&t ltd a hardware maintenance firm was acquired by igate corp in 2000
