tidings april 2011 tidings april 2011 revelation of god s love god has revealed his love for man and his creation throughout the ages many hymns and poems have been written on the subject over the years.even then let us spend a few moments going through the bible which reveals god s love.praise god for having revealed his love.let us think of how some godly men perceived his love.the bible records the faith of several remarkable men of god in this short article it is not possible to think of all of them perhaps one of the earliest proclamations of god s love is when he saidlet us make man in our image after our likeness gen 1:26 a god created us in his likeness.in making eve as a helper for adam god again revealed his love the bible tells us that this relationship that god provided adam and eve is a shadow of the ultimate relationship that god has designed for his people jesus being the bridegroom and the church his bride.but although he created us in his likeness we chose to sin albeit under the influence of an evil serpent and when the woman saw that the tree [was good for food and that it [was pleasant to the eyes and a tree to be desired to make [one wise she took of the fruit thereof and did eat and gave also unto her husband with her and he did eat gen 3:6 ever since then humans have had difficulty in appreciating god s love.we find immediately afterward, and they heard the voice of the lord god walking in the garden in the cool of the day and adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the lord god amongst the trees of the garden gen 3:8 while generally men have since then tried to hide from god there have been some remarkable exceptions and some of them have been recorded in the biblical hall of fame recorded in the book of hebrews chapter 11 the patriarch abraham was a notable exception who perceived god s love even in god s command to sacrifice his only dearly beloved son isaac.when we remember that father abraham trusted god and believed his love under these most trying circumstances even when he had no bible written word at all we marvel at his faith which revealed god s love to him.yet, from what the bible tells about abraham s faith we understand that god expects all humans to be like abraham job was another notable exception for most of us it is impossible to conceive how job appreciated god s love even after having to suffer as terribly as he did.he had lost all his children his wealth and his health suddenly one reason he was able to appreciate god s love was that he was committed to trusting god and knowing his ways when all was lost and even after his wife had asked him to curse god.then said his wife unto him dost thou still retain thine integrity curse god and die but he said unto her thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh what shall we receive good at the hand of god and shall we not receive evil in all this did not job sin with his lips job 2:9-10at the end of the book we see job with a much greater understanding of the love of god which leads him to repent in dust and ashes.i know that thou canst do every [thing and [that no thought can be withholden from thee who [is he that hideth counsel without knowledge therefore have i uttered that i understood not things too wonderful for me which i knew not.hear i beseech thee and i will speak i will demand of thee and declare thou unto me.i have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear but now mine eye seeth thee wherefore i abhor [myself and repent in dust and ashes job 42:2-6 moses was another man of god who chose the difficult ways god showed him so that he could experience and share god s love.by faith moses when he was come to years refused to be called the son of pharaoh s daughter;choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of god than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season esteeming the reproach of christ greater riches than the treasures in egypt for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward by faith he forsook egypt not fearing the wrath of the king for he endured as seeing him who is invisible heb 11:24 -27 by his choice moses went through several troubles he could have been the pharaoh of egypt, one of the most powerful and influential positions of his day he however chose to know and share god s love with his people king david was another person who experienced god s love a remarkable thing about king david was that despite his busy schedule and responsibilities as a king he chose to meditate on god s promises.my hands also will i lift up unto thy commandments which i have loved and i will meditate in thy statutes ps 119:48 mine eyes prevent the [night watches that i might meditate in thy word ps 119:148 however even such a pious man was not exempt from bouts of depressions when faced with trouble as in save me o god for the waters are come in unto [my soul i sink in deep mire where [there is no standing i am come into deep waters where the floods overflow me i am weary of my crying my throat is dried mine eyes fail while i wait for my god they that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of mine head they that would destroy me [being mine enemies wrongfully are mighty then i restored [that which i took not away o god thou knowest my foolishness and my sins are not hid from thee ps 69:1-5 yet david sang of the love of god in almost all his psalms meditation on god s word and his obedience to god enabled david to appreciate god s love there are many other prophets kings and ordinary humans in the old testament who truly appreciated god s love even in the midst of calamities personal or national yet sadly in the bible we see that the much greater majority of god s chosen people forgetting the love of god and choosing to live in their own foolish ways which seemed convenient to them it is at this time that in his great love for humans god came to live as a human among humans as jesus we get some idea of god s great love and concern for humans as the bible tells us and all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him whose names are not written in the book of life of the lamb slain from the foundation of the world rev 13:8 from the time of the foundation of the world god had decided to save mankind who he knew could possibly sin by sacrificing his own son he made this decision as he intended to create man with a free will and capable of disobeying by wrong choice for humans it is impossible to understand the agony that god felt when this terrible decision was made perhaps some idea of the agony was understood by abraham and isaac throughout his life jesus was focussed on the cross he could not be persuaded by 15 16

tidings april 2011 tidings april 2011 satan to sin.jesus greatest sermon is believed to be the sermon on the mount which is found in mat 5-7 while the content of the teaching here on many aspects of life is revolutionary the remarkable thing about jesus was that he always practiced what he preached despite his strictest standards he showed his love for sinners by the way he forgave people like the woman who was caught in the very act of adultery john 8:3-11 and zacchaeus luke 19:1-10 he healed the sick persons whom he met although his focus was on their spiritual health afterward jesus findeth him in the temple and said unto him behold thou art made whole sin no more lest a worse thing come unto thee john 5:14 she said no man lord and jesus said unto her neither do i condemn thee go and sin no more john 8:11 while jesus was quick to forgive sinners he never ever compromised his standards he maintained be ye therefore perfect even as your father which is in heaven is perfect matt 5:48 he always was focused on the ultimate task of sacrificing himself for the sake of humans whom he loved so much and never ever allowed himself to be distracted from this goal.from that time forth began jesus to shew unto his disciples how that he must go unto jerusalem and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes and be killed and be raised again the third day then peter took him and began to rebuke him saying be it far from thee lord this shall not be unto thee but he turned and said unto peter get thee behind me satan thou art an offence unto me for thou savourest not the things that be of god but those that be of men then said jesus unto his disciples if any [man will come after me let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.for whosoever will save his life shall lose it and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it for what is a man profited if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul matt 16:21-26 he was always focused on the cross as he was sure of his father s will and the father s will was to save the corrupt and fallen mankind by sacrificing his only son jesus asked his disciples to take up their cross and follow him.yet in his love for frail sinners he also consoled us saying take my yoke upon you and learn of me for i am meek and lowly in heart and ye shall find rest unto your souls matt 11:29 as a teacher he promised us that he was meek and lowly and we could find rest for our souls as we learn practically from him but god commendeth his love toward us in that while we were yet sinners christ died for us rom 5:8 even just before he died on the cross, his prayer was that his ignorant killers may be forgiven then said jesus father forgive them for they know not what they do and they parted his raiment and cast lots luke 23:34oh his love for us is higher than the highest heights and deeper than the deepest depths and when he was with us physically he said this is my commandment that ye love one another as i have loved you john 15:12he even prayed to god that all his people are one with as close a bond as he shared with his father and now i am no more in the world but these are in the world and i come to thee holy father keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me that they may be one as we [are john 17:11 when we look at the christian world today with all the belligerent differences we sometimes wonder what happened to jesus s prayer we can never fully understand or thank god enough for his indescribable love yet we should constantly ask ourselves about our response to his love.do we try to obey his commandment or are we still like the greater majority in the old testament of god s chosen people forgetting the love of god and choosing to live in our own foolish ways which seem convenient to us we live in a world quite different from the world in which the patriarchs lived we have the blessing and curses of the information technology age advances in medicine mechanisation etc.sometimes we may even think that what applied to the patriarchs cannot be applicable to us or even that they were too old fashioned and hence not worth studying or following yet we must remember jesus christ the same yesterday and to day and for ever heb 13:8 even though the world has changed he has not changed his ways of dealing with humans.we know that we have no strength in ourselves to live as god wants us to live if we say that we have not sinned we make him a liar and his word is not in us 1john 1:10 but god enables us to do his pleasure for it is god which worketh in you both to will and to do of [his good pleasure phil 2:13 and yet let us be aware that there is a part we have to play in our response to god s love which st paul describes as working out your own salvation with fear and trembling in the previous verse.wherefore my beloved as ye have always obeyed not as in my presence only but now much more in my absence work out your own salvation with fear and trembling phil 2:12 we should examine whether each are working out our salvation with fear and trembling so that we may truly experience god s love the prophet isaiah said woe [is me for i am undone because i [am a man of unclean lips and i dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips for mine eyes have seen the king the lord of hosts isa 6:5this attitude is reflected in paul s exhortation to work out our salvation with fear and trembling.the writer of the epistle to the hebrews also tell us it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living god heb 10:31 for our god [is a consuming fire heb 12:29 paul tells the romans, and be not conformed to this world but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind that ye may prove what [is that good and acceptable and perfect will of god rom 12:2he tells the colossians if ye then be risen with christ seek those things which are above where christ sitteth on the right hand of god set your affection on things above not on things on the earth col 3:1-2 if we wish to know the love of god in a deeper way the prescription is given by the apostles saints prophets and patriarchs who wrote the bible under the influence of the holy spirit.other methods are of little no value and our focus has to be on the one who reminded us jesus saith unto him i am the way the truth and the life no man cometh unto the father but by me john 14:6 unfortunately for many of us who believe in jesus the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the pride of life are too deceptively attractive today and hence we are unable to appreciate the deep love of god.for all that [is in the world the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the pride of life is not of the father but is of the world 1 john 2:16 abraham koshie id 17 18

tidings april 2011 tidings april 2011 significance of pesach one of the most important gods in the egyptian pantheon amon is depicted as a bearded man wearing a cap surmounted by two tall plumes a ram a ram headed man or a ram headed sphinx amon was believed to be of egypt and patron of the pharaohs since rams were considered a symbol of virility due to their rutting behavior amon was worshipped as a fertility god to the egyptians the killing of a lamb was a desecration of their religion the passover sacrifice of a lamb was a direct challenge to their gods the feast of passover is celebrated on the 14th of the jewish month of nisan ever since its beginning passover or pesach as it is called in hebrew has been celebrated on the full moon of a month that literally means their flight and it was eaten during the night by the family it is at the feast of the jewish pesach passover that jewish parentsj still tell their children how god used 10 plagues to deliver their ancestors from economic bondage and political oppression the plagues began with the killing of the nile river which was worshiped by the egyptians as a source of life the plagues ended only after god took the life of every firstborn son of egypt the final decisive plague came during the full moon of nisan 14 it was the celebrated day of the egyptian god amon when he was at the peak of his powers moses instructed every israelite to sacrifice on that day a lamb collect its blood and with a hyssop brush paint the lamb s blood on the lintel and door posts of their houses on the evening of the first passover the lord visited egypt as an angel of death the bible says the lord took the life of every first born people and livestock included except where he found blood on the doorway only where there was blood on the doorway did he pass over and spare the life of the firstborn in that home the killing of the paschal passover lamb is sacrilegious in egyptian society for lamb or ram a male sheep represented a pagan god of the egyptians named amon whose name means hidden one amon was considered the king of the gods and the source of all life on heaven and earth the lamb was so sacred in egyptian cult practice that the people were forbidden to even touch a ram but moses instructed the israelites to bring the lamb into their home slaughter it roast and then eat it the passover sacrifice of a lamb was not merely a desecration of the egyptian religion but also a blatant insult to their supreme god amon but to the israelites the sacrifice of a lamb fulfilled the promise of the almighty against all the gods of egypt i will execute judgment i am the lord after the destruction of the temple by the romans in ad 70 for nearly 2,000 years lamb was not served in jewish homes during the passover 23 meal without the temple there could be no lamb sacrifice instead the rabbis declared that unleavened bread matzah bread would be the appropriate substitute eating the matzah would be equal to eating the lamb about 40 years before the destruction of the temple jesus declared that he had come to fulfill the meaning of the passover sacrifice at a passover seder which later became known by his followers as the table of communion jesus held up the elements of wine and matzah and applied them to himself during the meal jesus broke unleavened bread with his disciples and then held the broken matzah in his hands saying this is my body which is given for you do this in remembrance of me then after the meal jesus held up a cup of wine and said this is the cup of the new covenant in my blood which is shed for you the title of jesus as lamb of god is used by john in his gospel and revelations the passover lamb for the gospel is explicit in dating the death of jesus on the afternoon of the preparation day when the paschal animals were slaughtered john 8:28 19:14 isaiah s reference to suffering servant the lamb slaughtered for the sin of many is the fulfillment of the most profound and poignant prophecy regarding god s ultimate redemption of mankind through jesus paul alluded to this in 1 corinthians 5:7-8 for indeed christ our passover was sacrificed for us therefore let us keep the feast not with old leaven nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth in paul s opinion leaven is an illustration of sin the feast of the unleavened bread or pesach or holy communion therefore speaks of the need for god s people to live new lives marked by a break from the bondage of sin and darkness abraham yesuratnam 3rd death anniversary 17-04-2011 beatrice koshy grace cottage ymr nanthencode inserted by family members 24
