Hope Presbyterian Community Trust (HPCT) HPCT began almost thirty years ago to address the social needs of individuals in our community and has been operating in the community ever since. Our major stakeholder and community partner is Hope Presbyterian Community Church in Hornby Christchurch. Our vision at HPCT is to positively influence and strengthen our community by offering services that embrace families and individuals facing life’s challenges. We desire to bring a sense of empowerment and tino rangatiratanga (selfdetermination for both self and community), through building on and maximising the strengths of those we interact with. We endeavour to enrich our community with manaakitanga– mutual and reciprocal hospitality, where people support and encourage one another. We are inspired by the example of Jesus, his compassion and his giving of himself to those who were marginalised by mainstream society. HPCT Board Members Chairman Alan Ferguson Board Member Hamish Galloway Board Member Brent Richardson Hi I’m Alan Ferguson; I have been married to Shirley for 36 years. Life is full of fun, challenges and chilling out with our six adult children (David, Teresa, Daniel, Joanna, Justine and Nathan), two sons’ in-law (Noel and Reuben) and two grandkids (Ethan and Kayla). All live around the west of Christchurch except Daniel who is in Laos. We have been part of the Hope Presbyterian family since the 1970’s. Workwise, I have been involved with applying computer applications in a science environment (mainly building an information system to support the NZ Drinking Water Standards). Some other random facts are; we spent 3 years in Bangladesh in the 1980’s, I get around on a 1200cc motorbike and I am currently (happily) retired/between jobs/unemployed. I currently chair the Hope Presbyterian Community Trust Hi I’m Hamish Galloway; I am the senior pastor at Hope Presbyterian. Married to Anne for over 35 years, we have 3 grown up children and 3 grandchildren. Among other things I love to golf, cook seafood dishes, read novels and watch good movies. Getting into a good TV series is also a passion, as is pottering in my garden, taking the dog for a walk or having a philosophical talk with a friend over coffee or a nice craft beer! I love the emphasis that Hope has on community involvement. The church has had a long history of involvement in Hornby and Hei Hei. More recently this has grown to include West Melton and Rolleston. We are strong supporters of Te Whare Awhero. I love the way Te Whare Awhero is growing links with the community – I have a passion for community development and am proud to be a trustee Hi I'm Brent Richardson and I'm on the pastoral team for Hope Presbyterian Church. For the last 4 years I have been establishing a congregation in the fast growing town of Rolleston. I am married with 2 university aged children. HPCT Board Members Continued Board Member Bill Penno Hi I’m William (Bill) Penno; I lived and farmed at Morven in the Waimate District until the end of 2012. I have been married to Janice (Jan) for 49 years and we have four grown children. I was invested with a Queens Service Order (QSO) for community service in 2005 and although not a Rotarian then, a “Paul Harris Fellow” Rotary medal in 2011. I was Moderator of the South Canterbury Presbytery for three years and for a number of years, convenor of several committees. My Community involvement included a number of national, regional and local bodies. This included Waimate Hospital committee, South Canterbury catchment board and Canterbury regional council. My home church was Morven Presbyterian Church; I was involved in many Leadership roles including being a locally ordained Minister from 2007. Since then we became involved with Hope Church Hornby and subsequently I have become a board member of HPCT. Spare time activities include reading and yachting – mainly thinking about it. As a committed Christian I believe that we should respond to opportunities to serve if called to do so and if others consider we have the necessary attributes. Chairman’s Report In summary, 2015 was a year of significant change for the Trust and one of steady progress following on from previous years. The 27 years the Trust has operated acts as the foundations of the present operations and guides much of the decision making. The appointment of Blair Stirling as Director of Community Ministries in 2010 has brought many new areas of involvement in our local community and much wider. Particularly due to the response to the earthquakes, there have been significant projects (eg CAN – Communities and Neighbours) that have been developed and have matured but which have now been wound down. Others (Counselling) continue to be well used as the effects of the earthquakes continue to be felt five years on. CAP (Christians against Poverty) started in February while Jo and Roberta have been learning much, they have helped many people who found themselves trapped by debt. Overall, there has been significant volatility over this period which has been a challenge to manage, but we end the year in good shape and good heart. Governance The current Trustees are Bill Penno, Brent Richardson, Hamish Galloway and Alan Ferguson (chair) with (ex officio) Lea McEwan (Hope Church/Outreach) and Blair Stirling (Director). The Trustees acknowledge the significant contribution that Jo Pomare made as a trustee. Following Jo’s resignation, the Trustees have been seeking one or two new Trustees. In November, the Trustees spent a day away to allow time to discuss the “big picture” matters that the monthly meetings do not allow for. One area discussed was Church/Trust relations – how the Trust cooperates with the ministries of the Church to achieve the greatest benefit in the community. The Trustees have recognised the tensions of being too close to the Church operations and of being too isolated. Part of the outcome was the Trustees adopted, as part of the Trust’s Strategic Intent the statement “to transform the world in the power of the Spirit” which members of Hope Church will recognise. Another key area was on future priorities, particularly progressing the development of a holistic care centre that combines many disciplines in the area of personal and community care. The Bread Ministry and Firewood Mission have operated for many years, which is testament to the tenacity of the instigators (Helen Mazlin and Al Fone respectively), the faithful assistance of many volunteers and the continuing need in the community of bread and firewood The success of the various projects of the Trust relies on the dedication and inspiration of the many volunteers and staff and the careful oversight of the Trustees. Director’s Report It always astounds me how quickly the year seems to go, perhaps because we have all got busier in our day to day routines. Taking time to write an annual report is a good exercise to sit and reflect on what has been learnt, achieved and developed prior. 2015 was another year of growth and change for us as a Trust. At Te Whare Awhero we juggled space and place developments with a period of relocation longer than expected. Full credit to the staff for their adaptability and passion for what we do. Oscar also has had to contend with relocations and space changes with the many redevelopments in the education environment and more changes are likely, Marie and Sarah have traversed this terrain successfully. Community based activities continue to be ably led by a dedicated team of volunteers who provide a wonderful service to the vulnerable in our community. The Trustees have worked hard in the area of Governance to provide a strong and stable platform for the work we do with special thanks to Alan Fergusson for his support throughout the year. In this report each department is presented with a financial summary to conclude the report. In each we reflect on the transformational work that we undertake in the community. Finally, to all those who support the work we do we thank you for the many ways you contribute to the vision and purposes we have as a Trust. Community Engagement Building hope and transforming our community is the core of our activities at HPCT, through Te Whare Awhero we are able to engage considerably with our community and those tasked with leadership in our community. Three areas have been key for us in the area of community engagement over 2015. Firstly In 2015 we completed a Participatory Action Research Project with the Riccarton Wigram Community board and key Christchurch City Council staff in our area. The research was a large project undertaken to explore the dynamics of the post-quake environment in the Riccarton Wigram Ward to assist in a strategic approach to developing wellbeing in our community and strategically explore our community’s future. Key findings recognised the impact of rapid and accelerated change process and how this impacts. A strategic framework was developed and utilised in the construction of the Riccarton Wigram Strategic plan. The research is available from blair@hopecentre.net.nz and strategic plan from the Christchurch City Council. Secondly In 2015 we engaged in a capacity building project with partners in Selwyn and the Ministry of Social Development to build the capacity of community organisations at grassroots level. Through this project we built strong relationships with other providers in Selwyn and locally. The project focussed on collective impact approaches to transformation and we have been working to build collectively under a localised strategic plan which was presented to providers and the community for adoption in December 2015. Copies of the strategic plan can be obtained from admin@hopecentre.net.nz. Thirdly and related to the above we have been providing significant leadership through change for Heartlands Services in Hornby which was impacted upon by the Work and Income shootings in Ashburton. As a result security measures have impacted negatively on service users accessing Heartlands. In response whilst maintaining business as usual we have led a high level of community engagement to explore future wellbeing services in the Greater Hornby area and working with others to ensure services are maximised to meet the community’s needs. This conversation is developing further concepts around Holistic Care, integrated and collocated services. Counselling Report Increasingly, members within our local and wider community are facing on-going daily and historical challenges. These challenges can impact our emotional, physical, and spiritual wellbeing. Our ability to cope can be compromised and research has proven that having a safe therapeutic space to be able to share and explore ones’ inner pain can create healing and restoration. As an agency we have been able to continue to provide low cost person centred counselling for our clients, including those that are most at risk, our vulnerable; children and older adults. To provide a therapeutic space has been a privilege, a privilege that has enabled us as counsellors to work with an array of complex issues and circumstances. The challenges experienced by our clients have predominately presented as primary issues including; depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, grief, Post-Traumatic Stress, anger and emotional distress. For many of our clients it has been a tough year, a year that has seen us provide close to 1000 client sessions. The most impacted age group seeking our counselling service has been adults (60%), followed by children and adolescents (40%). The majority of our clients live in Christchurch West, followed by Christchurch South and North West. Our counselling team, of interns, volunteers and contract counsellors have grown personally and professionally throughout the past twelve months. As the Counselling Coordinator I have had the honour to supervise, mentor and develop six trainee counsellors, and three volunteer and contract counsellors. We not only work towards developing our clients but those that are working with them. Thank you to all our counsellors, and referrers. Your contribution in 2015 has been immeasurable. Thank you for being a part of the growth that is positively impacting those within our community. I am also grateful for the administrative and managerial support from Te Whare Awhero, Hope Church and the Hope Presbyterian Community Trust for your encouragement and helping us to help others. CAN (Community & Neighbours) Report Communities and Neighbours [CAN] is a neighbourhood project breaking down the loneliness and isolation experienced by many older people. The issue of social isolation can occur any time and often many years prior to retirement age. This can be sudden or a slow process. Then when it parallels considerable changes taking place in one’s health and associated frailty the social isolation can have much greater consequences. So we aim to educate and prevent, as well as create new connections for people. CAN is continuing to build a strong collaborative relationship within the Older Adult sector – specifically with health and wellbeing services to instigate referrals, as well as working alongside community flax roots initiatives which may be both for referrals and solutions. Facilitation of these objectives has been measurably progressed by the location of our facilitators in key community spaces. Working alongside some key community lead organisations has led to dynamic relationships being augmented. This included working alongside many of the CCC tenancies in the East of Christchurch. However, 2015 was a year of highs and lows. In January we saw the employment of 3 new part time facilitators, and we were able to service three quarters of Christchurch City. Our referral rate and name as a service grew considerably. Then in June we found out that we had no continuing funding from the Ministry of Social Development. While we applied for more funds, this didn’t respond until the calendar year of September, so sadly this meant we could not renew the fixed term contracts of our facilitators. This caused us to pause, but not go away in the community. After two weeks we were able to secure some part time hours for the project which enabled us to pursue more funding avenues as well. So we can happily say that Rata, CCC and for the 2016-year Caritas have enabled us to move forward in a full-time and part-time capacity to improve people’s lives through their connections. This also meant we did not have the geographical restrictions of the MSD funding requirements. Now we are able to be open to all of Christchurch and have opted to include being open to the disability sector in a much greater way. CAP (Christian’s Against Poverty) Since CAP (Christians Against Poverty) Southwest, based at Hope Community Church Hornby, launched in March, I have met with 16 clients, with one these clients having just become debt free! Ten clients are currently active with CAP and on their journey to be released from debt. Our clients have come from a variety of sources including Hope Church, Te Whare Awhero, Heartlands, Social Workers in Schools, Megan Woods Electoral Office, and Comcare Selwyn. In February Christians Against Poverty will have a presence in Heartlands each fortnight for two hours as a trial. It is exciting to be giving hope to our clients, and helping them gain the right support to become debt free and the satisfaction and release from stress that brings. Community Gardens Another mixed year…the redesigned garden at the Te Whare Awhero site 36 Amyes Road has more or less been established about 1 meter in from the boundaries with further design consultation in progress. BRANSTON – This part of the garden provided a quantity of produce – tomatoes, rhubarb, peas, fruit and garlic. This garden has sadly come to an end with the at the end of 2015 in preparation for the school demolition. Produce from the garden has been distributed as in the past with less distributed to the counselling client sector this year but continues to benefit the Hope church members and local community at both the midweek and Sunday services, handiscope and general contacts within the community. There were some tomatoes plants, marigolds, cucumber plants raised in the garden and then offered for sale through the church, netting the CAP Ministry more than $70. Input from community corrections volunteers has been vital in the upkeep of these gardens and more volunteers are always welcome. David Clarke OFFSITE WORK – we continue to be involved at a number of private jobs, most recently doing gardening for some church members. Of this we have only touched the tip of the iceberg. We work closely with the CAN project clients. Thinking about the above and other tasks I had an initial discussion with Blair late in 2015 and look to meet with him soon about the possible revival of the Ministry of Worx project. hanga tumanako i roto i te ao whati 13

Firewood Firewood Mission Annual Report - 2015 The Mission 1) To provide firewood free of charge to: a. The poor, the desperate and the needy b. Those who are working in other areas of service for The Lord c. The workers at the mission 2) To share the ‘Good News’ with the recipients. Volunteer Hours: approx. 20hrs/week Staff Hours: 0 News about Jesus shared: 48 families How much did we do? Delivered 138 m3. Felled about 15 trees Split about 53,103kgs (approx. 53 ton) Who is better off? 48 Families Half a dozen good keen men Highlights of the year:  Installation of a container on site.  Purchase of a second log splitter (yet to be warranted and used)  The volume of firewood we have already prepared for next season plus the amount we now have for the following (2017) season!  A few more new blokes have become regulars.  Working at the pit. – Great location.  Working with a team of committed and passionate blokes who love being involved Current Issues: Our funds have been depleted due to the purchase of the new splitter so we’re conscious of the need to tread prayerfully.
