mines news events in march kl played host to some of the most prominent personalities in global design today the first midi mines international design intelligence convention at the mines international exhibition and convention centre miecc ran for only two days but the malaysian design community took full advantage of it and had themselves a grand ol time on friday 10 and saturday 11 march international luminaries who presented their work at the two-day shindig were karim rashid kustaa saksi walking chair jaime hayon aric chen paul davies frank tjepkema dave alhadeff devilrobot and abnormalbehaviourchild greeting them were local design activists galleriiizu radioactive brandcommunications com eleven18 territory and every malaysian designer s best friend basheer books filling the relatively small exhibit space which was dwarfed by the malaysia furniture city exhibit just next door the designers gave their all engaging visiting professionals students and laymen alike with seminars and informal conversations the exhibits were meant to be hands-on experiences from walking chair s rotating circular ping pong table to galleriiizu s huge walk-through installation to kustaa saksi s detail-overloaded dining room serving up custom-designed sneaks on fine bone china the smallish space and accessibility of the designers made for a very homely feel and although not a riotous celebration of international design aesthetics the midi convention exuded a warmth that embraced anyone with a passion for design and functional beauty things took a glitzier turn come night time with the midi gala dinner on friday night fashionistas nino bauti and niki brodie of london and helsinki s anna komonen showcased their latest designs for `06 in a lavish if somewhat subdued setting with all the exhibits put away and booths packed up saturday night s midi party was a lot more upbeat the weekend was drawing to a close and the international delegates were flying off the next morning the booming house music was supplied by designer djs these people do everything don t they paul davies of visionaire and hannah holland of club trailer trash from london the entrance was a little hard to find outside and behind the convention centre-we got lost for a minute and initially the party seemed like it wouldn t really take off when it began at 9pm there was a lot of mingling for sure but exchanging business cards do not a blow-out party make an hour and a half later though everyone got into the mix and filled up the improvised dancefloor-even karim rashid and walking chair busted moves like it was studio 54 kustaa saksi most probably said it for everyone involved when he remarked that the midi convention was a good start it really did seem like we were on the ground floor of a much larger annual event to come in the years ahead whatever shortcomings this year s debut outing had were all but forgotten when the lights went up at the end of the party and everyone was just itching to move onto midi `07 j the midi convention was held at the mines exhibition and convention centre on 10 and 11 march for more on this year s participants log onto www.midiconvention.com courtesy of juice magazine ch lifestyle 9
