newsletter january 2010 issue four ­ vol i welcome to the fourth edition of the team burns newsletter since the founding of team burns many volunteers have come together and participated in numerous activities raising awareness and money for the american cancer society our team was created in memory of a wonderful husband father and friend ted burns who ultimately lost his battle to cancer in august 2008 although not all of the current members of the team knew ted personally each is very committed to the cause of fighting this disease with the purpose of helping others just as ted did throughout his life each of the people who give of their time to work as members of team burns will tell you a personal story of why they do it but the most common reason is so that one day we will hear that our work has played some part in the finding of a cure in the past year our team has set and accomplished goals both individually and collectively as a team and i encourage you to visit our electronic media to read about all of our activities from october 2008 through the present you may find information about us on facebook by looking for team burns relay for life or www.myspace.com/teamburnsfightsback at our website www.teamburns.org and on the very informative springsing blog at http springsing2010.wordpress.com new members continue to join each quarter and we are grateful for the ideas and service of every dedicated person amazingly even those who had limited financial means or felt they had no time managed to find a couple of hours here and there and with that said look at all of the great things we have achieved it is with deep gratitude that i thank all those who help us and who continue to find new ways to support and sponsor our team with our yearround activities i hope you all enjoy your time with your families and have a blessed new year in every issue we have individual photographs and brief biographies on featured team members enabling our readers to meet each one of us we call this the team member spotlight in this issue we are less focused on specific people but instead on the collective body of businesses and individuals who have contributed to our continued success we will continue to do the member spotlight going forward and ask you to look forward to meeting jessica armistead samantha blackard and lauren shtaida in the next issue news flash fleece hoodies sold out only a few team burns jackets remain so order now or you will miss this item jacket is black with a small logo on the front left chest reduced cost is $35 each.

how can i help you ask there are many ways 1 when you go to the american cancer society acs website through relay for life and select the donate tab then select team burns we will get credit for the donation but the money will go direct to the acs www.relayforlife.org/waltonga the acs uses that money to fund valuable research provide life saving treatments and assist patients with medicine and funds to make living with the disease easier 2 you may also tear off the back page of this newsletter and send your check to team burns purchasing merchandise or simply donating funds to support our efforts 3 if you live in georgia or are traveling in our area we invite you to come and support us at events throughout the year if you are outside of georgia we ask you to send a check using the attached i would like to donate form or you can make a donation on-line at acs relay walton county site which you can get to through our website www.teamburns.org or you can purchase the merchandise we offer through our website 4 you can also volunteer to participate from your own city please call us at 770.267.1272 or email us and we will tell you how you can help either one time or ongoing it is your choice we can use you either way if you do any of these things then you are contributing to cancer research and helping our team remember that any funds you give are 100 tax deductible from the irs because you are donating to the american cancer society no matter how you do it please know that we appreciate anything you can give and are anxious to put your donations to work thanks in advance from team burns survivor s kit in this section of the newsletter we discuss resources that every patient and caregiver should know part of team burns mission is to raise awareness and to make sure that those who have specific needs get assistance in getting those needs met although we are not a foundation yet and cannot offer direct financial assistance we can let you know about programs that are available we are a resource for you and will make sure that you have the most up to date information in every newsletter the most valuable tool we can place in today s survivor s kit is the telephone number for the american cancer society anyone may call for any reason 7 days a week 24 hours a day the acs is there to answer your questions give you referrals calm your fears and help in any way you need they have helped people fill prescriptions when they have run out in the middle of the night they have provided patients with gas cards to get them to and from doctor s appointments people with specific conditions have received grant money for medical bills co-pays and for a wide variety of medical equipment if someone you know has to travel a far distance to seek medical treatments the hope lodge can provide free lodging for the patient s family the american cancer society has dedicated professionals available to talk with you about anything you want or need to know so call them if you or someone you know needs to at the following number 1-800-acs 2345
