Android 5.0 Memory Leak Detected by External Developer By Tyler Janzen A re you already running Android 5.0 on your mobile device? If so, this article may be of interest to you! Recently a serious memory leak has been discovered in the boot sequence of Android 5.0 Lollipop. This memory leak is caused by the system during t h e boot animation. The images for the boot animation get loaded into the devices memory and never get released. What does this mean? It means that some devices might run out of memory before the system has finished loading. This will put your device into what’s called a boot loop where the phone will only boot up to the boot animation before either freezing or rebooting itself and starting the whole process over again. Luckily, there is a strong devotion to the Android platform by the open source developers who frequent the XDA Developers forums and XDA Senior Member arter97 has found a solution for those who have rooted their device. On his thread, arter97 offers a customized boot animation binary file that you can just drop into your system to replace the old one which fixes this memory leak. This drop in binary won’t work for everyone, so arter97 warns that you may need to implement his fixes by including his modifications at the source code level and then re-compiling Android. There are plenty of willing individuals on XDA who already build custom ROMs (ROM refers to the android operating system) and you should be able to find a developer for your device who would be willing to incorporate this fix into their ROM. If your one of the lucky ones who has a device that Google will update, just be patient as there has been a fix implemented by Google for Android 5.0.3 and has been marked as the next release of Android. There’s no telling how long it will be before Google releases 5.0.3, but at least they listened to the developer who found the issue and have implemented a fix for it. If you’re interested in more information or to download the binaries required to fix this issue, visit arter97’s thread by scanning the QR Code below or typing the link into your browsers address bar. 2

Online Calendars to Create More Group Productivity and Coordination Online calendars is an effective way to organize groups of people, whether social club or small business, who are at different locations. In addition, these calendars can be reached by everyone in the group as long as they have internet access. The administrator of the calendar determines who can update the calendar and who can view the calendar. Placed here is a calendar demo by On the left side, there is list of the users, and in the calendar are all the marked events for the month. If the members of your group use different locations, consider using these calendars to organize your efforts. Stephen Garvey 3

LONGTERM ENERGY SAVINGS IN YOUR HOME John Williams VP Homex Inc. Homex Inc., a Calgary based low voltage solutions company which specializes in Control4 Automation has several proven ideas for you to save money. Like most things in life, you have to spend money to make money – in this particular case, we have to spend some to save some. The cost of lighting our homes and workplaces is a major expenditure. In fact, one quarter (1/4) of the average electricity is soley from the cost of lighting. Did you know Only 10 percent of the electricity used by an incandescent bulb generates light… the rest is quite literally… wasted. In some Cases that means up to 22.5% of your power bill is wasted by powering incandescent bulbs. The average incandescent bulb will last for upwards of 1,200 hours. In order to effectively save money in lighting your home and workplace, Homex Inc. recommends that consumers replace their incandescent light bulbs with either Compact 10 ‹‹ ‹‹ ‹‹ ‹‹ ‹‹ Set your lighting, music, temperature and video to greet your family or customers with the perfect welcome. With one button your security system arms, lights go on, temperature adjusts and all the music and TVs automatically turn on. Keep an eye on things—from anywhere. Whether equipment or lights are left on, or unusual activity is detected, you’ll always be in the know without having to drive by for an in-person check in. Never worry about the lights being left on again. They can be dimmed or actuated remotely, or on a pre-determined or random schedule. Contact Homex Inc. for a free evaluation and quote to see how we can save you money. Homex Inc. is an Authorized Control4 dealer, as well as an authorized Lightstar dealer. Selling LED bulbs for any location and ant requirement. the incandescent light we’re used to. CFL bulbs generally come in a cool or warm colour spectrum. A 25 watt CFL provides the same amount of light that a standard 100 watt incandescent bulb does. CFL bulbs generally last 8-15 times longer than a standard incandescent bulb. The average life of a CFL is 8,000 – 12,000 hours. The primary disadvantage to CFL lights Fluorescent Bulbs (CFL) or LED bulbs. Before making the decision to replace your existing bulbs, one should take the time to understand a little bit about these two technologies. CFL, or compact fluorescent, is simply a mini version of a standard fluorescent light bulb which are configured to fit in standard light sockets without any adaptor. The light appears much like

is the mercury contained within the bulb. This is ordinarily not a problem, but if the bulb breaks, clean up is a hassle and a potential health risk. Mercury is a dangerous heavy metal, and proper cleanup and disposal of CFL bulbs is critical. Never place a CFL bulb in with the rest of your garbage. Contact your local waste management company to learn how to safely dispose of used CFL bulbs. LED (Light Emitting Diodes) lights last substantially longer, so even though you’re paying more at purchase, you buy fewer bulbs over time. The average LED light should last for 55,000 hours. These bulbs fit in standard light fixtures and require no adaptor. LED lights are also available in a variety of light spectrums from 2,000 Kelvin to in excess of 9,000 Kelvin. Both CFL and LED bulbs are available in models that are dimmable. Dimming your lights saves even more money. According to Lutron, every dimmer automatically saves 4-9% in electricity—even at the highest lighting levels—over a standard onoff switch. When users choose to dim their lights, even more electricity is saved. Quite simply, the more you dim, the more you save. A standard light switch only saves electricity in the “off ” position. Dimmers reduce power to the lighting source or bulb, so they save energy and can extend bulb life. Incandescent and halogen bulbs last up to 20 times longer when used with a dimmer, increasing the money saved.LED bulbs run cooler when dimmed which can also extend bulb life. Homex Inc. can automate some or all of the lighting (and other systems) in your home or office resulting in substantially improved operating efficiencies. | Read it online @ 11
