definition of first aid first aid is the immediate care given to an injured or ill individual to keep him or her alive or stop further damage until qualified medical treatment can be administered cpr stands for cardio the heart pulmonary the lungs resuscitation bring back heart attack occurs when the blood supply to part of the heart muscle is severely reduced or stopped stroke occurs when blood vessels that delivers oxygen-rich blood to the brain ruptures or blood clot forms and blocks the flow of blood in the brain aed automated external defibrillator is a device that uses a computer chip to analyze the heart rhythm and determines whether a shock is needed the abcs of first aid a airway is the victim s airway blocked if so clear the airway b breathing is the victim breathing if not restore breathing c circulation is the victim s heart beating if not restore the heartbeat shock shock disrupts circulation in an attempt to correct damage from an injury and to protect its blood supply the body routes blood away from outer tissues to organs inside the body this will cause adequate oxygen from reaching the brain in severe cases the injured person can lose consciousness and blood supply to vital organs like the heart causing death types of bleeding 1 arterial bleeding characterized by bright red blood that spurts with each heartbeat this is a serious event and needs quick reaction to stop the blood loss 2 venous bleeding characterized by a steady flow of dark blood 3 capillary bleeding characterized by a slow flow of blood types of fractures 1 closed a break in the bone that does not penetrate the skin 2 open compound a fracture where sharp edges of a splintered bone have cut through the skin stop the bleeding 1 direct pressure apply continuous direct pressure to the wound this is the best way to control bleeding 2 pressure bandage if blood is seeping through apply an overlapping bandage pressure bandage to stop the bleeding 3 elevation when applying direct pressure keep injured limb elevated above the heart to slow down the flow of bleeding 4 pressure points in case of severe bleeding that does not slow or stop using direct pressure finger pressure may be applied to the pressure point on the injured limb between the wound and the heart joint and muscle injuries 1 dislocations occurs when a joint comes apart and stays apart with the bone ends no longer in contact 2 sprain an injury to a joint in which the ligaments and other tissues are damaged by violent stretching or twisting 3 strain/muscle pull occurs when a muscle is stretched beyond its normal range of motion resulting in the muscle tearing heat injuries 1 heat cramps muscular pains and spasms caused by the loss of salt from the body through heavy perspiring 2 heat exhaustion occurs when fluids are not adequately replaced or when sweat does not evaporate because of high humidity or too many layers of clothing causing the body to sweat even more 3 heatstroke occurs when the victim s cooling mechanism stops working because the body perspires so much that no fluids remain to produce sweat this injury is a medical emergency that can be fatal if not treated as soon as possible three types of burns 1 first degree burn reddens the skin 2 second degree burn produces blisters and swelling 3 third degree burns causes deep tissue destruction reaching all layers of the skin down to the bone cold weather injuries 1 frostbite results from exposure to cold ice crystals form in body tissues exposed to temperatures below freezing 2 immersion foot/trench foot results from long exposures of the feet to wet conditions at temperatures between 32 degrees and 50 degrees 3 hypothermia a general cooling of the body to a temperature below 95 degrees caused by continued exposure to low or rapidly dropping temperatures cold moisture wind snow or ice 4 snow blindness the effect that the glare from an ice field or snowfield has on the eyes 5 dehydration occurs when the body loses too much fluid salt and minerals can occur in both hot and cold climates.
