how to stop the cycle some say it calms them some say it helps with focus and others say it is their best friend research says it fulfills none of these roles and will in fact kill you so why does over 20 of canada s population still do it smoking was at one time a fashionable and accepted social activity accepted that is until the connection between smoking and cancer was made public in the 1970 s since that time smoking has become the exact opposite of fashionable in the 21st century it is seen as unacceptable behavior in most parts of canada the positive side to this new way of thinking is that people have been quitting and more importantly never starting the smoking cycle but quitting is not so easy in fact it is recognized that addiction to nicotine is harder to break than addiction to either cocaine or heroine so while marketers of tobacco products no longer reap large profit margins on their products the marketers of smoking cessation products have profited well over the last few years as more and more people try to butt out there are a number of paths to becoming a non-smoker all of these paths have advantages and disadvantages for the nicotine addict some products available to people trying to quit smoking are classified as nicotine replacement therapies or nrts nrts come in various forms nicotine patches nicotine gum or candies and recently nicotine puffers the advantage of nrts is that they help people overcome the physical habit of smoking while minimizing symptoms of withdrawal from nicotine this strategy has worked for many people the disadvantage of nrts is that they do not target the main problem of smoking directly and that is an addiction to nicotine many people who use a nicotine replacement to help them quit smoking find a new addiction to the nrt itself other smoking cessation products come in the form of prescription drugs that help minimize panic attacks or cravings one must remember that nicotine is an addiction like any addict quitting a drug smokers experience extreme withdrawal symptoms when they deprive their bodies of nicotine smokers can take drugs that function as antidepressants or more recently as nicotine inhibitors it is thought that by helping nicotine addicts deal with the emotional turmoil of withdrawal and the physical desire continued on next page read forward e 7

to have nicotine the success rate in quitting will increase to date these drugs appear to be helping although no firm evidence is available to support long term success rates one must note however that there have been serious side effects for some people using these drugs from seizures to nausea smokers considering using a drug to help them quit are well advised to ask their doctors about the potential problems associated with the drug other tools that smokers may look at that have no known physical side effects are hypnosis and acupuncture both of these remedies have been used successfully to help some smokers reach their goal of becoming smoke free neither remedy relies on medication hypnosis works on the power of suggestion to help a smoker look at smoking differently it is believed that the majority of a smoker s addiction is the mind a smaller battle is the physical addiction itself therefore hypnosis targets a smoker s thinking and helps him or her realize that smoking is not a wanted friend but a deadly enemy acupuncture works on both the mind and body this treatment is based on the medical belief that pressure points in the body can be stimulated to affect both our physical body i.e cravings and our thoughts i.e mental addiction if a smoker believes in these forms of treatment then success will be greater both remedies do require a strong commitment from the smoker to quit the final path to quitting is free and available to anyone who chooses it that is to just quit within three weeks the body is completely free of nicotine and no longer craves it quitting cold turkey means pushing through cravings and being stronger than the addiction if a smoker can decide to quit then it may be three tough weeks but the hardest part will be over after this comes the lifetime commitment to live as a non-smoker by enjoying health more spending money more energy and ultimately freedom from a drug that kills there are many different ways to quit the nicotine addiction but there is no one tried and true easy way to quit it may take a nicotine addict several attempts to quit using different strategies before he or she is successful ultimately it is the determination of smokers to leave an unhealthy enemy behind that frees them to make new friends with their bodies and minds read forward e 9

ou ve put thousands of hours into your garden and want to capture its thoughtful design and spectacular colour with your camera if you are still using a film camera it s time to shoot digitally just a few years ago digital cameras for the serious amateur photographer were too expensive to consider purchasing with print and slide film becoming scarce the switch to digital is inescapable a digital photograph is recorded by an image sensor and processed using mathematical algorithms rather than imprinted onto a celluloid medium that must be processed chemically when a picture is taken the brightness of the light reaching the sensor is recorded as a pixel sensors that record more pixels are capable of capturing more detail in the shadows and highlights of an image image sensors capture only the intensity of light but not colour interpolation is performed by the camera s operating system to determine the perfect tone and hue with an image appearing on the camera s viewing screen instantaneously it is astounding how quickly information is processed the data is recorded onto a memory card a small electronic device that stores the image produced by the camera memory cards are available in different file formats and sizes depending on your camera while the initial expenditure of a digital camera may be a deterrent it can be less costly over time memory cards can store hundreds of images and can be used many times in most cases the cost of buying and processing a few rolls of film is equal to buying a memory card thousands of images can be taken and downloaded to your computer from one memory card over its life you will likely take more pictures of your garden with a digital camera without the added expense of film the press of a button will delete a bad image leaving room to take another image prolific shooting will make you a more proficient photographer practice makes perfect and with no added expense for film processing you can shoot as many images as you want with immediate feedback from the viewing screen you will know whether you took the shot you wanted if not you can try again without delay y continued on next page read forward e 15
