www.celiac.mb.ca president s message hello fellow celiacs as i write this on a beautiful bright sunny morning with balmy well balmy for manitoba in february temperatures celiacs across the susan finlay country are celebratpresident ing the federal health manitoba chapter minister s lo ngawaited announcement about the changes to the food labeling laws in canada it wouldn t have happened without lots of grass root support the resulting media coverage across the country has raised the profile of celiac disease remember that together we do make a difference and speaking of ottawa make plans to attend celiacs in ottawa a capital conference may 13-15 the national conference there will be building on the great job all of you did with our conference here last year keynote speaker will be dr daniel leffler a respected physician expert in celiac disease he and melinda dennis a dietitian with celiac disease have recently released their book real life with celiac disease besides all the great gluten free eating and celiac information at the conference ottawa is a beautiful city you really must see the masses of tulips in full bloom at that time of year early bird registration deadline has been extended to april 1 locally here there has been lots of exciting news too delta hotels called to ask for help in preparing gluten free menus for their restaurants iva yeo has agreed to work with the hotel on behalf of the chapter the manitoba pharmaceutical association asked for someone to speak on celiac disease at their provincial conference in april our capable dr jocelyn silvester will be taking on that task the manitoba chapter will also have a booth at the pharmacy conference hopefully none of us will need to go into hospital but if you do it s nice to know that the winnipeg regional health authority s nutrition and food services has just added assorted gluten free sandwiches and gluten free raspberry cookies to their menu let s not forget about rural manitoba either grandview the other side of dauphin has invited the chapter s participation in its upcoming health fair the home economics teachers are having a conference in may and have asked for someone to do a half-day session on celiac disease and the gluten free diet more exciting news is that a camp in the whiteshell is looking at accommodating 9-11 year old celiacs this summer eating gluten free has been a huge challenge for celiac kids these are very positive steps heather yeo has embarked on the first of the chapter s traveling road shows she and a group of volunteers will be visiting rural communities to provide celiac disease/gluten free diet information sessions for the general public the first one will be in portage la prairie you know your community is there a spot at your local church or school or hospital where a similar event could be arranged i recently attended a gardening conference i was really impressed with the way the conference organizers and the caterer addressed my gluten free diet as well as other special diets the gluten free food was clearly labeled as such covered with saran to prevent cross-contamination and served on a different table from the other food one of the meals was a beef stew the caterer had made a special effort to buy potato flour to thicken the crockpot of gluten free stew she had made a gluten free dessert specifically for the celiacs too it turns out that she has a family member with a severe food allergy it s unfortunate about the family member but what a blessing for the celiac at the conference ktkatering did a great job did you know that chatelaine is now identifying one of their recipes each month as gluten free how did this happen someone wrote to chatelaine and asked isn t it amazing what can happen if one speaks up january s recipe was sweet and spicy scallops with bok choy february s was ham cheese frittata looking at the other recipes in these issues lots of the other recipes were also gluten free but just think of the recognition this has brought we are getting to be mainstream the chapter s annual general meeting will be on april 2 please think about 7 celi-yak spring 2011 taking on a role www.celiac.mb.ca brewers get exemption from allergy label rules gloria galloway/globe and mail the federal government is demanding that canada s food and beverage manufacturers provide labels that do not mask ingredients which threaten the health and occasionally the lives of people suffering from food allergies but health minister leona aglukkaq who introduced the new packaging requirements monday gave brewers a temporary exemption from the regulations saying she will first consult with other countries which have introduced similar labeling rules the decision pleased the beer-makers who say some smaller breweries would have had to spend millions of dollars to replace their painted bottles to conform with the new rules they also say every beer drinker knows what s in beer prior to ms aglukkaq s announcement food allergy sufferers were afraid that the objections of the beer industry would derail the entire re-labeling initiative which had been many years in the making our intent was never to hold up the entire regulations said andré fortin a spokesman for the brewers association of canada so we re happy that health canada decided to go ahead with them we re also pleased with the decision to take into account the particular situation for beer the beer labels are of particular interest to people suffering from celiac disease whose intestines cannot handle the gluten contained in such grains as barley wheat and rye we are very disappointed by the last-minute decision of the government to pull the regulations for the beer said laurie harada of anaphylaxis canada which represents people with food allergies the government should move quickly to figure out what it will do about beer labels she said they can t give us any idea of the process or the dates right now so i would still be asking the question how are you going to deal with this but ms harada said she is extremely pleased that the government will proceed with the bulk of the new regulations it will certainly help to protect a number of people she said allergy sufferers say existing foodlabeling requirements often leave them puzzled about what is in the products on their grocery-store shelves margarine may contain milk that is not indicated on package labels egg can be listed as albumin seasonings may mean sesame seeds and there are many other ways that potential allergens can hide the revised regulations will require that manufacturers clearly identify food allergens gluten sources and sulphites either in the list of ingredients or at the end of the list of ingredients in addition an allergen or gluten source must be written in commonly used words such as milk or wheat it is estimated that 5 to 6 per cent of young children and 3 to 4 per cent of adults suffer from food allergies nearly 1 per cent of the population is affected by celiac disease for them the consumption of foods containing gluten can lead to long-term complications because of the complexity of the changes and the shelf life of foods the food industry has been given until aug 4 2012 to comply with the new regulations beer contains wheat or barley which inflames the conditions of celiac disease the beer-makers argue some of the smaller breweries have spent millions of dollars on painted bottles that would have to be replaced if they must be updated to include an ingredients list they also say every beer drinker knows what is in beer but the societies that represent celiac sufferers and people with food allergies are disappointed by the exemption and say all food and beverages should have proper labels the dispute had threatened to kill the whole re-labeling initiative which has been many years in the works the government instead has opted to proceed with most of the changes to make existing labels more clear and deal with the beer industry at a later date currently margarine may contain milk that is not indicated egg can be listed as albumin seasonings may mean sesame seeds and there are many other ways that potential allergens can hide the revised regulations will require that manufacturers clearly identify food allergens gluten sources and sulphites either in the list of ingredients or at the end of the list of ingredients in addition an allergen or gluten source must be written in commonly used words such as milk or wheat 15 celi-yak spring 2011 it is estimated that about 5 per cent to 6 per cent of young children and 3 per cent to 4 per cent of adults suffer from food allergies nearly 1 per cent of the population is affected by celiac disease for whom the consumption of foods containing gluten can lead to long-term complications because of the complexity of the changes and the shelf life of foods industry has been given 18 months to implement the new labeling regulations the cominginto-force date is set for august 4 2012 gluten free at fairmont the chocolate ganache flan is a hit with our gluten-intolerant tester fairmont hotels introduced healthconscious breakfast lunch and dinner items to suit the needs of customers with gluten-free vegan hypertension and diabetic diets think vietnamese vegetable summer rolls with spicy nuoc cham braised pork belly and vegetable fried rice with spicy pineapple and lychee dacquoise with mango curd on the menu at the fairmont pittsburgh every fairmont hotel meets each of the dietary demands throughout the day with offerings specific to that region s flavors and seasonal availability chefs use a computer program to evaluate ingredients to determine if each meets a particular diet s apiary is on the roof and the bison tenderloin with turmeric mustard-seed chutney by chef felix pfister at chateau lake louise the new menus are a tasty success no matter your dietary concerns but you
