enrichment activities enrichment activities cooking all students do a cooking activity in their class every two or three weeks all children will be asked to cooperate by bringing the necessary ingredients approximately twice a year you will get a note from the teacher advising you of what your child should bring to school a couple of days in advance if you have any problems or you can t send the ingredients on the required day please contact your child s teacher field visits field trips are an important complement to our program these trips provide students with the opportunity to gain first hand knowledge of the topic they are studying each class will go on several outings this year in order to conduct fieldwork activities a permission slip for each field trip will be sent home with your child it must be signed and returned to school the following day children who do not return a signed permission slip will not be able to go on the scheduled field trip children are also required to wear their physical education uniform when they leave school grounds the number of adults on field visits is limited however teachers will do their best to invite different parents every time so that you may have a chance to go on at least one field visit per year at home reading programs we wish to make reading an important part of our students lives we know from research as well as from experience that parents play a crucial role in their child s development as a reader we offer two structured read at home programs the reading motivation project and the book in a bag program reading motivation project our reading motivation project is directed at pre-first students this project involves those parents and children who wish to share and enjoy reading together this is by no means an obligation or a mandatory activity its objective is to try to encourage in your child the love and enjoyment for reading if you wish to engage in this project please do the following · · · you will receive a booklet from your child s teacher select a story with your child use easy stories with simple text and illustrations read the book to your child if he is not yet able to handle it on his own upper pre first students may attempt to start reading some simple stories independently early childhood department 9

enrichment activities · assist your child in completing the book report form it is okay to help and to fill in parts for your child all children will begin to gain skills and you will know when your child is ready to start writing in some simple parts on his own after you read a story send the booklet back to school so that your child may be able to share the story that he read with his classmates do not keep the booklet until it is completed send it to school after every completed book report don t try to read the story and complete the form in one day let your child be the judge it is fine if a report takes a few days do not force your child to engage in this program instead try to motivate him to want to read your child s teacher will keep track of every story your child reads based on every form completed those students who read will receive books and/or diplomas every month students must bring in their last book report before the award ceremony on the day announced in the tell me on tuesdays as last day for bringing in book report forms every child who completes five book reports or more will receive an award a child does not have to read five stories or more in one month awards will be given after five completed books regardless of the time of completion after your child has completed the whole booklet his teacher will give him a new one we know this involves much of your time but we are sure your child will greatly benefit from your effort · · · · · · · · · book in a bag pre-first students will be taking home reading material and a booklet inside a plastic bag every day · · · · · · · if your child needs help reading the book please read with him send the book back to school every day even if your child did not finish it because we may use the material in class if your child does not return a book he won t be able to borrow another one write finished on the booklet when your child has concluded reading if reading material gets lost you will need to pay a $75.00 seventy five pesos fee to cover its cost we will not be able to send reading material home until the fee is paid if you find the material too easy or too difficult for your child please let us know by writing a short note on the booklet you may use these books to complete the book report for the reading motivation project early childhood department 10

policies and procedures for your child s safety policies and procedures for your child s safety arrival and dismissal preschool students are welcome to arrive at school between 8:45 and 9:00 a.m and students at our toddler center may arrive between 9:00 and 9:15 a.m we wish to provide a safe environment for your child and we ask that you help us by complying with our schedule unfortunately our staff is unavailable before this time and no one is there to take care of your little one it is also very important for students to arrive when classes begin otherwise they will be missing a valuable part of the daily activities dismissal time for students is at 1:30 p.m there is a 15 minute tolerance until 1:45 p.m all students in alpes 605 who remain at school after 1:45 p.m will be incorporated into the extra program the extra program services end at 3:00 p.m please make sure your child does not stay at school after this time because there isn t anyone available to take care of him there will be no extra program services on short days please make arrangements to pick up your child at 11:30 a.m on those days students will not be allowed to leave school grounds with anyone who is not registered on our list of authorized persons if you have not registered the names of the persons who may pick up your child please stop by the reception to do so if your child is to leave school with a friend or any other person that is not authorized on our list a written permission slip must be sent from home if you need to pick up a student before 1:30 p.m you must wait until a member of the staff brings him to the reception area we will ask you to fill out a form at the gate dismissal is a daily event and a routine procedure nevertheless it is a time of day when all teachers and staff must be attentive to our students we ask you to help us by being prompt in picking up your child please excuse our teachers if they are not able to assist you or talk to you during dismissal since they are on duty and must take care of the children your cooperation in these matters is very important in order for us to be able to maintain a high level of security for our students in order for us to have a good relationship with our neighbors we ask you to comply with the following rules · · be brief when picking up or dropping off your child to avoid traffic jams never double park or leave your car in our neighbors driveways if you must park leave your car beyond the school s entrance early childhood department 12

policies and procedures for your child s safety we regret to inform you that if you do not comply with the above rules your child will be suspended for one day taking care of your child s health to protect the health of all our students we have a licensed nurse in every one of our campuses we carry out constant screening observing for symptoms of illness we follow a consistent hand washing schedule and we disinfect classrooms furniture and didactic material on a weekly basis if your child suffers a major accident while on school grounds he will immediately be taken to the abc hospital all our students have medical insurance when they are at school or on field trips parents need to cover the hospital fees and will later receive a refund from the insurance company illness policy a child needs to feel well in order to be able to participate actively in our program if a child comes to school when he is not feeling well he will be more vulnerable to infection it is in the best interest of your child and his classmates to keep him at home when he is ill if a child presents any symptom we will ask you to come and pick him up if we notice symptoms upon arrival we will ask you to take your child back home in the specific case of signs of respiratory illness we require that your child s physician writes a waiver to be brought in the day your child returns to school if your child contracts a contagious disease please inform the nurse if your child is to take prescribed medication during school hours bring the medication along with the doctor s instructions to the nurse s station do not send medication with your child or in his lunchbox emergency procedures all our staff members have received first aid courses and they are trained to use fire extinguishers we conduct fire drills on a regular basis and we have well-structured evacuation plans in case of a major emergency at either one of our campuses early childhood department 13

policies and procedures for your child s safety policies on various matters birthday celebrations we want all our students to feel special on this very important day we welcome you to share your child s birthday with his teachers and friends if you wish to bring a cake please contact your child s teacher in order to set a convenient time for this event we ask you to bring all the necessary items candles napkins matches forks paper plates and a knife sorry no piñatas shows or field trips are allowed during school hours in order to avoid hurting anyone s feelings your child s teacher is only allowed to hand out birthday invitations to out-of-school parties if the whole class is invited however should you plan a small party we suggest you do the inviting privately parents who have organized a party and are picking up several children should do so at 1:45 p.m we urge you not to plan parties during school hours toys it has come to our attention that there have been some problems with the children who bring toys to school sometimes the toys get broken and the owners get upset the children often give the toys away without permission from parents and then argue over the toys and their ownership to alleviate this problem we ask you to please have your children leave their toys and possessions at home we have many wonderful didactic resources at school which your child will be able to use dressed for the occasion at our school children experience with a variety of materials including some that can be messy we don t want your child s good clothes to be ruined so please send him dressed with clothing that is appropriate for work and play children do wear smocks and old shirts for these activities but accidents occasionally happen early childhood department 14

policies and procedures for your child s safety evaluations our progress reports are designed to give you an indication of your child s increasing readiness skills as well as his social and maturity gains in comparison to age group norms during the preschool years your child s adjustment to the class the other children and his fine and gross motor development as well as the more academic aspects of readiness are equally important factors to his success in school you will receive a progress report three times during the year please sign and return it to your child s teacher the following day after revising it carefully school should be a cooperative place for parents teachers and students to learn together it is very important for us to bridge the gap between home and school and to be able to work closely so that we may understand your child better during parent-teacher conferences all of us have a chance to talk about and discuss important aspects of your child s development parent-teacher conferences are held once a year during the months of january and february a student portfolio will also be kept throughout the year this is a collection of significant work that shows your child s development and growth in different areas portfolios will be sent home at the end of the school term homework upper pre-first students will have homework twice a week your child s teacher will inform you about the days homework should be expected preschool is in many ways a preparation for elementary that is why we want to instill in our students the necessary habits for their later success homework is a responsibility that children will need to handle well so we wish to teach them how to cope with it before it is mandatory upper pre-first students are not reprimanded in any way for not bringing in their homework it shouldn t take your child more than 20 min to do his homework if more than the allotted time is required please contact your child s teacher if your child does not understand the assignment don t do it for him send it to school the next day with a note to the teacher and she will be happy to go over it with him if your child does not want to do his homework don t feel stressed it is not your responsibility the teacher will deal with the situation remember that the preschool child is learning to assume responsibility and this might be quite a long process early childhood department 15
