11th march 2011 term 1 week 7 b o am b e e phone 6653 1107 e-mail boambee-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au bu l l e ti n fax 6658 2543 bps online www.boambee-p.schools.nsw.edu.au `achievement through effort a proud member of the bongil bongil community of schools dear parents and caregivers international women s day march 8th each year is the celebration date for international women s day the theme this year had a focus on the education of women and girls following investigation and a report by the global campaign for education it revealed that 65 million girls around the world are not attending school the report also found that two-thirds of the 880 million illiterate adults are women social traditions and deep-rooted religious and cultural beliefs are most often the barriers to expanding girl s educational opportunities in undeveloped countries around the world education is vital to lasting positive change in children s lives one of the 2011 international women s day messages has highlighted the importance of further education for women and girls in developing countries caleb tiller of the united nations foundation writes girls may be the answer to some of the world s most challenging problems research shows effectively investing in the education of girls in developing countries creates a virtuous circle that improves health and prosperity for entire communities there are many organisations around the world that are supporting the education of women and girls the wwf s girls education program assists in the education of girls through the completion of both primary and secondary school in priority places including the eastern himalayas coastal east africa and the philippines connecting to wwf s core mission of saving life on earth the fund also initiates environmental education in each region a crucial element for youths growing up in high biodiversity regions of the world wwf provides basic education for underprivileged girls while engaging them in environmental activities and lessons that teach them the importance of conservation to present and future generations wwf supported girls have become community and conservation leaders teachers and health care professionals and many others have continued on to college the wonderful work being done around the world to improve educational opportunities and lifestyle of all children is certainly something to celebrate as part of international women s day each year fantastic effort congratulations to all the swimmers who represented our school at this week s north coast region swimming carnival the results were fantastic with four students qualifying for the nsw state pssa carnival results nicole condie 6th in breaststroke luke mallia 1st in breaststroke this was a personal best swim by 2 seconds kate bowles 1st in backstroke ky sullivan 3rd in 200m individual medley corey warn 3rd in freestyle clare gosschalk 6th in 50m breastroke gaby mallia 5th in individual medley and 6th in 50m backstroke estelle mallia 7th in 50m freestyle unfortunately our champion junior girls relay team were disqualified the rules are very strict at this level of sport and it would have been a tough decision for the swimming coordinators we have all had disappointments at times in our lives and helping children to learn to deal with disappointment is very important to their overall development and resilience according to dr michael gross when children are constantly protected from facing challenges or feeling emotions such as disappointment they are denied the opportunity to develop essential life skills we are very proud of you girls-keep smiling we wish luke kate ky and corey all the very best on monday 28th march when they compete in sydney at the state carnival once again we thank the parents and guardians who made such a big effort to transport children to this event.

toys at school as a follow-up to a previous newsletter regarding toys at school we continue to ask parents to discourage children from bringing toys to school the wet weather has created challenges during play times and to help with this there has been some relaxation on toys coming to school during the past couple of weeks however several issues and conflicts have developed in relation to toys creating unnecessary upset for children teachers and parents children have access to the library for board games the technology room for computer games and passive play equipment in nominated areas during the lunch break let s hope the weather clears soon and once again the children can enjoy the active playground games set up each week thanks to mrs bale the playground is equipped and full of activity each monday morning children can choose from football afl golf cricket basketball games just to name a few the children in this school are extremely fortunate to have such extensive playtime choices sports trials it has been an amazing couple of weeks for sporting achievements in our school each year individual children have the opportunity to try out for selection into a mid north coast squad and further opportunity to be selected into a north coast region pssa representative team students have participated in toormina district pssa trials in the following sports and been selected into the mid north coast squad:basketball ­ well done sam crampton good luck next wednesday football soccer ­ congratulations to luke mallia david schutt danny woodhouse james lowe james murray riley atkinson and ella shaw cricket ­ a fantastic effort by haydn smallwood afl ­ today james murray curtis smith and riley atkinson will contest for an mnc team position tennis trials are next monday good luck to riley atkinson david schutt and melissa lieschke thank you mr glover next week we welcome back mr singh who has spent the last couple of months in india mr singh will continue the whole school music program introduced by mr glover it has been wonderful to see the enthusiastic response from students to the music lessons we thank mr glover for his energy and dedication to boambee school and wish him all the very best in his future overseas adventures 2 collect a-caps norco bottle caps tops are again ready for collection from milk bottles families collecting caps please send them to the school office this is a great way to raise several hundred dollars over the year harmony day on monday 21st march communities across the nation will celebrate harmony day our school is celebrating next friday 18th due to the lake ainsworth camp harmony day celebrates the cohesive and inclusive nature of our nation and promotes a tolerant and culturally diverse society the continuing message of harmony day is `everyone belongs it s about community participation inclusiveness respect and a sense of belonging for everyone celebrating the cultures that make australia a great place to live all students will be involved in working on class activities around the theme of harmony day and playing the harmony game this is not a mufti day stage 3 lake ainsworth excursion final payments should have been received by friday 11 march if you are having difficulty paying this amount please contact the office by monday afternoon at the latest weekly assembly items for assembly next week will be performed by 3/4m assembly starts at 2.15pm and everyone is welcome at next week s assembly we will be giving out the sport house captains and vice captains badges bulletin 4b went bananas at assembly this week they gave a very interactive performance and presented a wonderful poem well done kids
