Autor da Enciclopédia Russell Norman Champlin Russell Norman Champlin nasceu no dia 22 de Dezembro de 1933 em Salt Lake City, Utah, EU A. Fez o grau B.A. em Literatura Bíblica no Immanuel College; os graus M.A. e Ph.D. em Línguas Clássicas na University of Utah; escreveu suas teses na área dos manuscritos gregos antigos do Novo Testamento; fez estudos de especia­ lização (no nível de pós-graduação) no Novo Testamento na University of Chica­ go. Na sua carreira como professor univer­ sitário e escritor, publicou mais de 45.000 páginas de literatura. Sua m agnum opus foi O N ovo Testam ento Interpretado. Publicou mais sete livros e colaborou na publicação de diversos outros; escreveu um número significante de artigos sobre a filosofia que foram publicados em revistas especializadas no Brasil. A estas realiza­ ções, acrescenta, agora, a E nciclopédia de B íblia, Teologia e Filosofia que contém 13.000 artigos.

Também, é impossível estagná-la dentro de um sistema qualquer que tolamen­ te acha ter toda a verdade e ter resolvido to­ dos os problemas. (Arthur Ford) A grande maioria dos artigos desta Enci­ clopédia são simplesmente informativos e serão proveitosos para pessoas de todos os credos e denominações. Alguns dos ar­ tigos incluídos são controvertidos e cria­ rão discussões animadas. Debates não de­ vem ser conduzidos no Ódio Teológico. (Ver o artigo sob esse título). O debate expande o escopo do nosso conhecimento e aprimora a investigação, portanto, não deve ser receado nem evitado. Mas o amor é a própria e s s ê n c ia e a p r o v a da espiritualidade (I João 4:7,8,12,16) e deve ••• governar todas as nossas atividades. O co­ nhecimento e o amor são as duas grandes colunas da espiritualidade, mas «se eu co­ nhecesse todos os mistérios e toda a ciên­ cia... e não tivesse amor, nada seria». (I Cor 13:2) Combinamos nesta Enciclopédia as três áreas, Bíblia, Teologia e Filosofia, as três sendo intrinsecamente inter-relacionadas. A Teologia é a irmã da Bíblia e a Filosofia nos ajuda tanto a entender como a expressar nossa teologia. ••• ••• É nossa esperança que esta Enciclopédia seja útil para aumentar os conhecimentos dos leitores sobre os três campos tratados. Em­ prestamos liberalmente dos trabalhos dos outros (como a Bibliografia mostra) porque ninguém escreve uma enciclopédia deste vo­ lume só de conta própria. Informações estão sendo acumuladas ao longo dos séculos, e nós transmitimos estes dados aos leitores, es­ sencialmente, através de compilação. Materialismo A alma é imersa no bem-estar físico; dominada pelo egoísmo; afligida pelo agnosticismo e ateísmo. 2. Superstição As evidências de poderes super-humanos são sufici­ entes para convencer a alguns de que a abordagem materialista não pode explicar todos os fenômenos. Mas bem pouco é reconhecido acerca de tais forças. 3. Fundamentalismo Rígido, Farisaico Livros Sagrados tornam-se objetos de adoração. Cre­ dos rígidos dominam o pensamento. Porções dos Li­ vros Sagrados são distorcidas ou omitidas na tentati­ va de criar um credo sem conflitos ou problemas. 4. A Mente Inquiridora, Iluminada Os homens começam a pensar; as convicções espiri­ tuais são mantidas, mas há menos dependência ao mero dogma. O intelecto é posto por detrás da inquirição espiritual. 5. Perseguição e Perseverança A alma do indivíduo é afligida por profundos anelos espirituais. Há tensão interior, ou mesmo angústia es­ piritual. O amor de Deus passa a ser enfatizado acima de tudo. 6. A Vereda Mística A alma esforça-se por desvencilhar-se dos muitos dogmas e sistemas parciais. A alma procura a Presen­ ça de Deus. A iluminação é procurada com todo o coração. 7. Estágio Final Transformação à imagem do Logos na Visão Beatífica.
