Life in the workhouse October 1850 : Dear Mum, Today, I'm 9 years old, I think about you and my father. I was in an orphanage but now, I am in the workhouse because I was too old for the orphanage and my life is very difficult. In the workhouse, there are lots of poor children, like me. We are thin and we have dirty clothes. We work a lot, but eat very little. The master is bad and very severe: it's a hard life. November 1850 : Dear Mum, A week ago, I and the other children were very hungry. We wanted more food but we were scared of the master so we did the short straw and I was chosen to ask for more ... I am very unlucky ! I was afraid but I did it. I hoped we could have some more food but I was very worried. When I asked, the master was very surprised and furious. I was beaten by the master. After this, the boss sent me to work at Mr. Sowerberry's shop. I was beaten again. Mr. Sowerberry was very bad like the master. So today I decided to run away...

Oliver meets Dodger November 11th, 1850 Hello mum ! I miss you a lot. Yesterday, I ran away because I was angry being ill-treated and underfed. I had been walking in the street quite a long time when I saw a boy on the sidewalk on the other side of the street. He was alone too. His clothes were dirty and worn out. He looked like a nice boy. He was wearing a big black hat and a long coat. I went to see him. He asked me where I was going and I said that I didn't know. He told me: « Come to London with me! ». As I didn't know where to go, I followed him. We talked all along the way. His name is Dodger and he is older than I. Dodger didn't tell a lot about him so I am left with questions. I think he might be an orphan and may not be very wealthy. I am happy to have a new friend. The journey was very long and difficult. We walked a lot without taking a break. We were very tired. He asked me: « Do you have a place where you can sleep tonight?». I answered that I had nowhere to go. He said: « I know a house where we can stay for the night. ». We arrived in London at 11 p.m. Dodger took me to a narrow street. It was a dark and dirty place and I was a little bit scared. We stopped in front of an old black house. Dodger told me: « Welcome to Fagin's house! » Tomorrow, I will tell you how the night was. Bye, mum. I love you.

The arrival at Fagin's house November 15th,1850 Dear mum, Dodger and I went to his friend's house.Dodger's friend's name is Fagin. Approching London, I was surprised to see an immense city with such high buildings. Then ,I walked into the city and, with a closer look, I found this place smelly, dirty and dark. In London, I found that people were rather unwelcoming. Dodger told me about his arrival at Fagin's house. In front of the house of Fagin, I opened the door of the building and arrived in front of his door. Dodger knocked at the door and an old man appeared, it was Fagin. I entered the flat. There were twenty children in the house ! The apartment is made of a single room. Children eat and sleep together. This room is small and not confortable but it feels good to lire in and it is still better than the orphanage !

At Fagin’s house December 17th, 1850 My dear mother, I am in London, I live at Fagin’s house. I am happy because I have a house and I eat well but it’s old, dark, dirty and small. There is a bedroom for a lot of little boys, orphans like me. Fagin is the owner of the house, he is an old man, poor, stange, but he has many jewels, beautiful watches in a box hidden in a secret place under the floor. I believe that he is a miser because he is rich but he lives in a house with poor people… Other boys bring handkerchieves back home, I am apprehensive but quite happy with my new life.

Description of Fagin December 22nd, 1850 Mum, let me tell you more about Fagin, a mysterious man. When I arrived at Fagin’s, I was a little scared because I didn’t know him. But the fear vanished when I crossed the entrance. Fagin, an old man, was very nice to me. I felt I was welcome because he gave me some food. Fagin is an ugly old man, with long red hair in disorder and a red beard. He is very nice but the last time, when I woke up, Fagin was looking at a box with jewels, and when he saw that I was awoken, he hid the box under a trap door and became very nasty. It was strange. No, Fagin is strange. He has got a hankerchief collection too. He may be a miser, because if the jewels and the hankerchieves are his, why is his house so poor and dirty ? The other day, Fagin asked me if I would like to learn how to do the hankerchieves. I accepted and I was very happy ! I feel this home will be mine too for the next years…

The theft in the street January 4th, 1851 With other children, we went in the street. Fagin asked two boys to teach me how to find handkerchieves. They saw a man who was in front of a bookshop; he was looking at the books. When I saw one of the two boys going to the right and the other one going in the direction of this man, I felt scared. In one second, the two boys had stolen a tissue from this man. The fear paralyzed me so I couldn't move . Suddenly the owner of the bookshop came out of his shop. The two boys ran away but I stood there. The owner of the store thought that I was the thief. Without thinking, I ran away. Some people ran after me to catch me. An old man stopped me with his fist and I fell to the ground : I was caught. The owner of the shop and some other people took me to the judge where I was finally proved innocent. But because of the fist, I felt sick and I fainted, so the owner of the tissue decided to take me to his house and the judge accepted this agreement. I didn’t know anything about it though…

Waking up at Mr. Brownlow’s January 10th, 1851 Dear mum, You won't believe it! When I woke up, I was in a place that I didn ’ t know. I was surprised, I tried t o think about what had happened. I was afraid and I felt weak because I was alone. The bedroom is sunny and clean. I am in a big bedroom and a big bed too!!! The room is blue, a light blue and there are high windows. They are higher than in the room where I was. There are many beautiful pieces of furniture and paintings. In front of the bed, there is a beautiful shiny desk and there is a black chair. There is a mirror. There are many objects on the shelves. On the windows, there are white and golden curtains. There is a carpet on the floor. On the wall there is a painting with a portrait of Jesus. Suddenly, I got a headhache and I felt very hungry. On my bedside table, there was a candle and there was a plate with some cake and a cup of tea. I am happy because it ’ s the first time I see a lot of cake just for me!!!! Next to me, there is a chimney and the fire warms me up. On the wall there is another picture. This one is a portrait of an old man . There isn ’ t any noise in the room. On the right, there is an open door, and I can see a bathroom. I think I am in a rich home. But whose house is this? What is going to happen now ?
