baccalaureate awards ceremony friday may 20 2011 7:30 pm wick center social room graduates begin processional lineup in cyber cafe at precisely 7:15 pm graduating students their families and members of the college community invited the word baccalaureate is steeped in academic tradition some historians date it back to the eighth century originally known as a spiritual observance of accomplishment the baccalaureate has come to be recognized as an event that celebrates achievement aspiration and the completion of undergraduate and graduate careers at daemen we take this time to celebrate academic traditions and perspectives honoring excellence and achievement well-earned and to congratulate undergraduate students who represent excellence in each department this is a dress up affair academic attire however is not required program opening remarks presented by the president of daemen college graduate address by the senior class president students presented awards for their academic achievements several campus-wide awards presented closing remarks by the dean of the college win special seating for your guests at commencement to add to the excitement to this year s ceremony all graduating students who attend the baccalaureate ceremony will be entered into a raffle for six specially reserved vip seats for their guests at commencement at kleinhans music hall the raffle will be held immediately following the baccalaureate ceremony at the reception in wick campus center dining room note only those who attend the baccalaureate ceremony will be eligible for the raffle baccalaureate reception friday may 20 2011 8:30 pm midnight wick center dining room all graduating students and their families are invited to attend this pre-commencement celebration · live music and dancing hors d oeuvres desserts and light beverages · compliments of the student association and senior class · let the party begin!

graduation brunch saturday may 21 2011 10:30 am 12:30 pm wick center dining room this brunch will enable you to spend a leisurely morning and have plenty of time to get to kleinhans music hall for the commencement ceremony brunch tickets are by prepaid reservation only cost $14.50 adults $7.25 children 5 to 12 years of age free for children under 5 please indicate if a high chair or booster is requested to reserve your brunch space simply fill out the graduation brunch reservation section on the reservation form and return it with your payment you may pick up your tickets in wick lobby upon your arrival for the weekend or even on saturday morning this event is always very popular and may exceed the seating capacity of wick dining room thus forcing us to limit reservations since reservations will be accepted on a first come first served basis please plan on making your reservations at your earliest possible convenience commencement at kleinhans music hall saturday may 21 2011 1:00 pm outside doors open to kleinhans lobby graduates and families begin to arrive 1:30 pm line-up begins graduates need to be in the mary seaton room of kleinhans doors open to kleinhans auditorium for general seating 2:30 pm commencement begins the ceremony lasts approximately 2 hours a note to families daemen college takes pride in graduating its students in a ceremony of great dignity and splendor it is a way of acknowledging the seriousness and magnitude of the accomplishments of each of our graduates the college shares this pride with its graduates and their families as we each play a role in making this a special day for each graduate the graduation ceremony is approximately two hours long all graduates and guests are asked to stay for the duration of the event daemen college continues to grow and once again we will have a large graduating class this year each graduate is asked to limit their invitations to a maximum of 6 guests at the graduation ceremony limiting the number of guests is necessary to ensure a seat for each graduate s guest and that we are in compliance with the maximum capacity safety requirements for the building listed here is some information about the ceremony that will allow families to help make things run smoothly each graduate will be given six graduation invitations compliments of the bookstore these are for your use to announce the big day and for you to invite your family and friends to help you celebrate these are not tickets to the ceremony.

guests with special needs we are happy to assist your guests with special needs seating we can reserve a maximum of 6 seats for your guests please contact us in advance either by phone 716-839-8253 or by email events@daemen.edu to discuss necessary accommodation including wheelchair accessibility to kleinhans music hall gifts flowers and alcohol flowers and presents should be given to graduates after the commencement ceremony the graduates need both hands free when they are on stage lapel corsages are permissible the daemen college bookstore will have a booth set up in kleinhans lobby to sell flowers disposable cameras and daemen college gift items alcohol is not permitted at commencement photos portraits families may photograph graduates from their seats or at a designated photo area located at front left of the auditorium as you face the stage no one will be permitted in the aisles or areas near the stage grad images/gradtrak will be taking several photos of each graduate at commencement these photos will be made available for purchase to graduates and families several weeks after graduation website www.gradimages.com customer service 1-800-261-2576 customer service email service@gradimages.com graduation attire academic attire is required to be worn by all processing graduates at the commencement ceremony graduates need to pick up and pay for their graduation attire in the daemen college bookstore prior to graduation if you have not already ordered your attire through the bookstore please contact them promptly at 716 839-8245 see additional information in this brochure rehearsal graduation rehearsal on friday may 20 is mandatory for all graduating students you do not need academic attire for rehearsal it starts promptly at 1 pm in wick center dining room at daemen college mortarboard caps women may wish to pin their caps to their heads using hair pins so they do not fall off when marching into kleinhans music hall or while crossing the stage men will be required to remove their caps during the playing of the national anthems and during the invocation carrying the hood the hood is carried on the left arm with the colored band near the wrist and the pointed end of the hood laying out away from the body after accepting the diploma cover from the president and shaking his hand you will transfer the cover to your right hand and present your hood to the person who will place it over your head moving your tassel near the end of the ceremony the dean of the college will direct all the graduates to move their tassels from the right to the left hand side of the mortarboard diplomas diplomas will be available for pickup in the mary seaton room at kleinhans immediately after the commencement ceremony to all may graduates who filed an application for degree form by february 1 diplomas that are not picked up will be mailed to the address the student indicated on his/her application for degree form canadian grads congratulations you persevered border crossings and many nights in hotels and motels to finally get your degree as you make plans to celebrate with us please consider coming early on friday for rehearsal staying for the baccalaureate reception festivities on friday night spending the night in the area attending the graduation morning champagne brunch and then leisurely making your way to commencement canadian graduates in past years have had problems easily making it across the border during victoria day holiday and have indicated they wish they had come the day before as we recommend don t be late commencement begins at precisely 2:30 pm you need to be in the mary seaton room of kleinhans no later than 1 pm graduates arriving after the final list is handed to the dean will be removed from the line-of-march they will not cross the stage and their name will not be read by the dean

ordering academic attire for commencement if you are planning to participate in the commencement ceremony on saturday may 21 2011 at kleinhans music hall and even if you are not sure at this time if you will be able to participate it is very important that you place an order for attire a cap and gown are required to be worn by all participants you will not be charged if you cancel an order however there is the possibility you will be charged a $5.00 late fee if you order after march 4 2011 orders must be placed by friday march 5 2011 in the bookstore so that you will be guaranteed to have your academic attire orders may be placed by using the link on the registrar s page by phone or in person payment is made when you pick up your package before commencement in may we are excited to announce that all caps and gowns are made in the usa from 100 post-consumer plastic bottles making the attire a sustainable choice caps are elasticized and one-size-fits-all the mortarboard is traditionally worn in a horizontal position not perched vertically on the back of one s head the tassel is worn over the right side of the hat before the degree is conferred and moved to the left during the ceremony gowns are to be eight to ten inches from the floor while wearing shoes please note this when you are placing your order we will add inches to your height if necessary to ensure the correct length the hood is carried over your arm until you have walked across the stage at commencement explicit instructions will be given to you at rehearsal the colors inside the hood are blue and white to represent the college the velvet trim on the hood signifies the degree gold for the sciences white for the liberal arts dark brown for the fine arts and teal for doctor of physical therapy if you are getting a dual degree the science degree takes precedence over the liberal arts or fine arts degree the bookstore has a selection of diploma frames and other gifts available for purchase the balfour class ring representative will be in the bookstore mid february 2011 rings ordered at that time should be shipped before graduation the bookstore will be open 8:00­11:00am the morning of commencement for last minute purchases bookstore staff will be present as well at kleinhans with a small selection of flowers and gifts available for purchase before and during the ceremony prices for academic attire purchases for 2010 are as follows bachelors masters doctorate complete gown hood cap tassel complete gown hood cap tassel complete gown hood cap tassel $62.00 $66.00 $79.00 any questions concerning commencement attire or announcements should be directed to the bookstore 716839-8245 graduation leadership awards each year at daemen college s commencement ceremonies several awards are conferred to selected seniors who have distinguished themselves within the college community as students with demonstrated leadership the president s office the student association and the alumni relations office each solicit nominations from members of the college community for graduating undergraduate students to be considered as candidates for these unique leadership awards nominations should also include appropriate supporting material on the candidate for review by the committees of these respective awards to nominate a graduating undergraduate student for an award go to the link for the on-line nomination form at the daemen college website the deadline for nominations is april 20 2011 president s award conferred by the office of the president a leadership award that particularly recognizes an undergraduate student who has exhibited extraordinary dedication care and concern for their fellow students mary angela canavan award conferred by the student association a leadership award that particularly recognizes an undergraduate student who has made significant contributions to the betterment of student life at the college alumni senior award conferred by the daemen college alumni association a leadership award that particularly recognizes an undergraduate student who has demonstrated exceptional dedication to the larger community.
